NAD - M*rshall 1987X
Good looking. And loud as hell...
PS; the shadow you see on the basketweave isn't what you think it is... Just the mic.

Nice amp. I used to have one of those back in the day. They do the old school Marshall thing very well. Enjoy!

Amp sure looks awesome !
Re: NAD - M*rshall 1987X
I've sent it back. Turning the presence knob made some weird scratching noise from speakers, like an old amp which hasn't been in use for a long time. At Marshall's Swedish service center they say it's normal (DC voltage) though I've spoken to two guys who own 1987's (one -96 and one from -15) and their presence controls are dead silent.
Furthermore the treble channel doesn't sound quite right IMO. Tons of uncontrolled feedback even at lower volume settings. And extremly trebly/nasal/harsh. Maybe that's the way Marshall's sound. It was a long time since I owned a Marshall amp but I can't recall any of my old ones sounded that way. The 1987 is my first plexi though and I didn't know what to expect.
Anyway; they're gonna send me a new one after checking everything's ok with it. If not, well...

Congrats.
I still have a '75 combo version (presence control is silent)
They are pretty loud and unforgiving, a bit like the old OR's in that respect.

Sounds like some bad filter caps, DC voltage passing to the pot sounds scratchy. The other noises sound like oscillation or microphonic tube...good to send back and get another.Bensnake wrote:I've sent it back. Re: NAD - M*rshall 1987X
Mine had some of these problems as well, but mine was the result of several poorly done mods. The worst offender was the lines from the phase inverter to the power tubes being swapped which turned the negative feedback line into positive feedback. When you'd turn up the volume past one and the presence past one, the result was earth shaking feedback.
Re: NAD - M*rshall 1987X
There's a '05 1959HW in mint condition for sale for less money that I'm paying for my 1987X. Should I go for it? I'm using an attenuator so volume isn't an issue. I figure the '59HW is a better amp in every aspect except for the lack of an FX loop.

Just let me be the first to say it......your gunna be needing a marshall cab. My OCD just wont allow for it to be sitting on an orange 412.

I'm aware of that. I haven't decided which model yet. If I'm going for the 1959HW I'll probably choose the 1960BHW cab.MikeD wrote:Just let me be the first to say it......your gunna be needing a marshall cab. My OCD just wont allow for it to be sitting on an orange 412.
