Big NAD Imminent

Post by snickerpuss » Wed Nov 11, 2015 5:33 am

As some of you gents may know, I've been searching for another excessive, high headroom, glorious, trouser-flapping amp for about a year. Had my heart set on a vintage DR103 or a Hitone clone, but after playing one for quite a bit, it became apparent I really wanted a non Vintage 30s cab to ease up off the high mids, which together with a used amp would have been in excess of $2500. That dream will live again someday. In the meantime, I've settled on something a little more fuzzy and a little more orange...
That's right, the forum has consolidated another AD140 Lead. Thanks to the elven eyes of iscid a couple months ago, I kept my peripherals on the market and took the dive today. Can't wait to spend more than an hour with the beast, and of course, pics, guts, and a detailed review are due on the date of the arrival!

Feel free to live vicariously through my anxious wait, or shower me with real talk on why I've just made a huge mistake. Any tips from other owners or past users? Also, there's still one for sale if someone's interested in #60... (Ben, why don't you hold off on those strymons and that new cab? )

AD140 Lead? Should get you a bit of headroom right enough. Maybe not quite as much as that DR103 somewhere out there with your name on it, but probably enough to be going on with meantime... :D

Looking forward to seeing and hearing about it!

Not soon enough! It's shipping through Fedex international priority. Anyone familiar with how long it will take to get to the western States from Europe?
Also, I'm looking for some clips or tunes to know what this guy is capable of. Is it fairly comparable to the AD30TC? I'd imagine that, unfortunately, the SS rectifier won't give me that creamy sag. Anyone know of artists that use or have used the AD140 Lead?

Congrats! I'm pretty sure both Graveyard and The Sword have used the AD140 at some point. Graveyard would probably give you a better idea of its tone. Iirc, they may use one on their bonarroo live clips on YouTube.

$1200 clams later, it's here. Cellphone is being replaced, so this is just a potato pic. #17 by the big dog, himself. That knucklehead Ade did not put the voltage slider on this sucker, so I'm gonna have to wire the transformers to parallel 120 instead of 240VAC for US use. Did you other 140 Lead American users have to do the same? Can't wait to peel some paint!

Congrats!!!!!!

I believe rewiring the transformer is reasonably straightforward - daunting though!!!

You got yourself a great deal there too!!!

Big +1 to all that - total bargain for a top quality amp that I'd say. Great score! 8)

Bet you can't wait to have it up and running...

If you're looking for a great AD140 tone example check out the band Criteria. Their records are all Travis Bean guitars into AD140s.

Thanks, guys, that's a big 10-4! I was stoked to get it at this price. Power's out at my place right now, else I'd have it cranked and blasted with my favorite big muff!

Damn. Criteria sounds great. Fuzzy and punchy. Weird I've never heard of them as I was pretty big cursive fan back in the day. Thanks!

Alright, spent a couple days with the beast. Here's my opinion. This is one of the greatest amps I've ever played; you cannot build a better amp, only a different amp. This thing is royalty in the tier of Harry joyce Hiwatts and vintage jtm 45 super leads.
What's it sound like to me? Kinda plexi-ish, but massively thick. Definitely has that strong midrange presence, but inherently Orange with gobs of low mids and bass, plus that signature fuzzy overdrive that's love it or hate it. Jimmy page at the 2008 reunion! One of Emsley's sonic signatures in his amps is where he puts the tone stack in relation to the preamp gain stages. This makes the amp very raw and punchy, and less smooth than typical brit amps. Really tightens the low end, though. Bass hits you like a slug to the chest. Compared to the classic OR120s, the AD140 has much less headroom, more punch, and much more gain and compression, though nowhere near the modern lineup. A little too much gain with my paf humbuckered SG, in my opinion, but that's only if you dime the amp across the board. Sounds KILLER with a Tele.
Also, Marty McFly'd myself a little and blew a fuse, because when you dime the gain and master, it idles at about 6-8 amps. Where can I buy 6 amp 5x20mm slo-blo fuses?

Initially toyed with the idea of flipping the amp, but now there's no way I'll ever sell this thing. Just incredibly satisfying to play. I love my OR100, but comparing the tone to this is like apples and... well, you get the jist.
