Orange PPC 412

Post by afjungemann » Thu Aug 27, 2015 9:40 pm

I just recently bought a PPC 412 and I am completely blown away... I have a TH30 combo and thought it sounded fantastic but then I plugged it into a mesa 412 cab and it was like a whole new amp. Sounded big and boomy and full so I decided to get an orange cab.

I cannot believe how much difference there is between the mesa cab and the orange cab. The orange cab feels like I am playing in front of a wall of speakers. It is HUGE sounding. I had heard they are tight and punchy so I was somewhat nervous that it would lose a little charm but not a bit. The cab with the TH30 is big, full, thick, punchy, and tight and probably 20% voodoo.

I have been an orange lover for a bit and every piece of orange I get makes me fall more and more in love with their products.

Did it come w/ a hernia belt/lumbar harness? That's about the only thing that's stopped me from grabbing one is the weight. My 1960A is bad enough trying to move up/down stairs solo, the PPC412 seems like it would wind up being a guaranteed injury for me at some point, just a question of when and how bad.

Seriously though, big grats! They sound and look great!

Orange cabs are a bit notorious for sounding awesome. Which is good considering the prices they are asking these days. Tons of live backlines/touring bands lug around Orange cabs I'm guessing for this reason.

I've had a PPC412 for a long time now, and loved it until I got a PPC212. The 212 is extremely punchy and "in your face", where as the 412 sounds big and bassy. If I can only take one cab, the 212 wins ever time. But if I'm at home, I'm running through the 612 just because I'm a jerk :D

I actually got it used and it came with a live in case so no carrying necessary other than lifting it in and out of the vehicle. I know a lot of people say you have to play orange cabs on the floor to get all of the tone out of them but just not feasible for me at this point.

Oh for sure! I would like to get a 212 at some point as well but especially in the used market, 412's are more cost effective.

I bought the manageably compact Crush Pro 4x12 with the VOTW speakers, having done this in anticipation of the arrival of a new black tolex Rockerverb 100 MKIII which, hopefully, will arrive very soon for general distribution in the US. I don't have much of a handle on how it will sound with the RV, but I've run a Deluxe Reverb amps through it and it seems to be just a bit darker and possibly less efficient than my Orange open back 2x12. Unfortunately, apartment living dictates how much I can crank it and since it's brand new, I would expect the sound to open up as it gets broken in on the job.

The good thing is if I don't like the VOTWs, I can replace them and not go over the price of a new cab with the V30s. In addition, I can get the compact 4x12 up and down since I can get my arms around it. It would almost be impossible to move the PPC412 by myself over a flight and a half of stairs!

2x12 closed back or open back?

I don't like the size/shape of the closed backs. I wish they were taller.

If you have a PPC412, you need an appliance dolly. I can carry mine up or down a few steps with no dolly (although I usually regret it the next day), but I can't imagine a full flight of stairs. Broken back or heart attack or both. And that's probably with the dolly :)

The PPC212 and PPC412 cabs are amazing. I also prefer the 2x12. It isn't as difficult to lug around and it still sounds huge. Can't go wrong either way...

I recently purchased a new Rockerverb 100 MKIII and a used PPC412A. It is the slant front cabinet that is rarely seen. I love it. I think it sounds fantastic. I put 3" casters on mine so it's not bad to move around!
