Phaser help

Post by LeeC » Fri Jul 24, 2015 3:56 pm

Hey guys. I'm looking for a new phaser pedal to replace my MXR block 90. I'm torn between the TC electronics Helix and the Red Witch Moon phaser. I play a lot of doom/sludge and I need a pedal that sits nicely within a very loud fuzzy mix at low tunings (anything from C down). The MXR just isn't doing it for me, especially when things get very fuzzy and a bit muddy.

My local music shop hasn't got a great selection of pedals and won't get either the TC Helix or the Red Witch Moon in for me to try. I can't find any demos online unless they are playing clean or slightly overdriven stuff. Something the 90 does well enough anyway.

Has anyone got any experience with either of these pedals. I'm favouring the Helix due to its customisation options and price but I've heard good things about the Red Witch pedals. Alternatively, it would be good to know if anyone has alternative phaser pedals they think would work.

Cheers. Lee

If a phase 90 is too much maybe the MXR Phase 45 is an option.
Or have a look at the EHX Small Stone or maybe Bad Stone.
And i always liked the clarity of the Maxon Phaser.

All of those arent the most expensive options either. O, if money isn't the biggest issue have a look at this,
The Phase24 by Keeley.

Oh no, that's the last thing I needed to hear. I have the Afterneath and totally love it.
I rocked the MXR EVH for years, sold it, but bought it again. I love the tone on that piece. I have a Hardwire that sounds decent and can be found on discount these days.I love the istomp small stone, so I am sure i would love the actual small stone, lol. I love me some phasers!

Have you considered getting a used Phase 90 and performing the R28 mod? It's a pretty easy one to perform and can save you a fair amount of $$$
Yes, the Dual Terror is loud enough!

This is what I did to mine. Simple snip and done. It made the pedal much smoother and cuts the "distortion" factor out.

The first thing I did to the Phase 90 when I bought it was remove the R28. In the end I bought the Helix phaser. It sounds nice in the mix and worked very well at band practice. It didn't like playing with my woolly mammoth clone, but neither did the Phase 90 or my bass player's flanger pedal. At the moment I'm very happy with the Helix.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've been using an earlier Mojo Hand Nebula Phaser through a AD15 with great results. They pop up on eBay from time to time for under $100. Very Pink Floyd sounding.
