Tubescreamer question...

Post by Foef » Tue Jun 30, 2015 4:59 pm

Hey guys!

My trusty old TS9 has died on me after something like 20 years of (ab)use... I'm replacing it with another ts style overdrive.
I was thinking about a Maxon OD808 or Seymour Duncan 805.
What do you guys think and why? Remember... Has to be a tubescreamer style. I like them for what they do.

You could try an EHX East River Drive. I use one with my RV50 and it sounds good, if you ask me :)

How about a new tube screamer? If you like it, don't change it. I'd go with the Maxon version though. The originals were made by Maxin and make them the same way, but with true bypass I think.

Most guys I know would say Maxon. I'm not a TS user, personally. May I ask, what's wrong with your pedal? Usually when I see a broken TS it's the part of the board where the power jack is attached, which definitely repairable.

I have the Maxon OD9 pro+ which I like but I have no other experience with tube screamers.

Pretty good comparison on here from Dave (I used to be in a band with Steve Via) Weiner

In the meantime, I'd look into have a pedal guy repair it. A 20 year old TS is probably worth repairing...

Billy's right.

Have you opened it up ? Any loose connections? Burnt looking components (diodes are usually put in places to take the hit and preserve the rest of the circuit.)

But if it totally died, and there's is no light at all, I guess the current isn't flowing through.
Is the guitar signal going through? When switched on/off?

You're always so nice and helpful when other forum members hit some troubles. Considering paying more than just shipping for their old useless junk is most commendable indeed.... ;)

Well... The pedal wasn't faulty at all... One output of my Cioks DC10 was only delivering a wee 3,7 volts dc so it's swapped because it went faulty within 30 days. Still i ended up with a Maxon OD808 because it had a more 'open' sound. The TS9's tone seemed more compressed in comparison. So i'm really thinkng about selling it.

Strange thing though... Whenever something seems broken GAS automatically kicks in. Someone should do a scientific paper on that... Psychologists should have a blast with that one.

Fulltone OCD overdrive .... any model is better than a Tubescreamer IMO. I am not saying the tubescreamer is bad or anything. But being a tubescreamer guy for many years , When I discovered the OCD it was like.... tubescreamer what? I would totally pick an OCD everyday over a tubescreamer.

Now that I have an Orange, I feel I need neither. But still, the OCD is a nice overdrive.

I used a tube screamer for years. Then I switched to a Maxon od808 as soon as they reissued them.

I tried a dozen other OD's but kept coming back to Maxon.

A short while ago I found a Boss sd-1 used for $15.00. It sat around for a long while (I had another one many moons ago and foolishly sold it) until one day, when I was redoing my pedal board, I decided to A/B it directly against the Maxon. The SD-1 yielded a slightly hairier, more complex gritty sound vs. the Maxon's smooth gain and slightly rounded tone. The Maxon has been sitting on the shelf ever since.

I performed a simple mod on it that gives it more bass and a more open top end (took about 30 minutes total )and now it's my #1 OD pedal with my Oranges, Marshall and Fender amps. I like it so much that I modded another one and placed it on my 2nd board.

I might even grab a 3rd (they are only $50.00 new) just to have a free floater around the house.

Besides the Maxon OD808 there's a OCD on my board. It's just a different sounding pedal that i use for low gain more british drive tones. And i like to boost it with the tubescreamer for leads. Both are set to a low gain drive. I use my amps drive channel for the serious high gain stuff.
