Just sold my CR120 combo...

Post by Bensnake » Mon Jun 22, 2015 11:43 am

What have I done???

Actually I did't play it that often since I use the POD live and the big heads for practicing and home use. A nice young woman with a little baby on her arm came and picked it up. Good looking mom, for sure... :D

A Rockerverb MKlll and a PPC412 in orange are on my wish list right now. But first some serious boating during the holidays.

Cheers,

Ha-ha not your usual guitar amp buyer!

But I'm sure with all those other nice amps you have you shouldn't miss the cr120 too much....

Do you think you will be replacing the mkII with the mkIII or hooe to keep both?

 No, not the usual buyer though very pleasant when it happens...

I intend to keep both. The RV50MKll + PPC212 is going to be my rehearsal studio amp with the rock band. The 100MKlll is aimed for the cave...

I use the RV50 with the rock band and the POD with the cover band. The other heads never leave the cave.

For the record; my rock band doesn't play live that much so you're basically right though...

That does sound crazy not to use one of your oranges live but honestly it is tough to play only one amp when playing covers. So I completely understand. My preferred rigs always include 2 amps to be able to get the correct tones I would need to cover all songs. A rockerverb 50 and an ad50 side by side for me would cover just about everything I need. But stage room and setup/ tare down time don't really allow for it. So I usually use an AD series amp.

Yeah, too bad. I realized that I was unable to cover all genres/songs with just one Orange on stage and bringing more than one and/or the Vox AC30 isn't realistic. So I went for the POD. It does everything good but nothing fantastic though a fair compromize for sure. Maybe a Kemper Profiling amp in the future...? 8)

The Kemper looks awesome... There are very impressive videos on Youtube with extremely realistic sounding profiles... Never got to try one though...

I have never been in a cover band...but can't you just use one amp anyway and just have a different flavor on the covers?.....discuss?

and I am interested in the micro that you have...did you sell it yet? I heard some good demos and at the price they go for I may pick one up....I bet you won't miss the CR120.....

Yes you can definitely put your own flavor on a cover song but IMO the better cover bands tend to be able to nail most the songs tones. Don't get me wrong it's awesome when bands put there own twist on a song but a whole set list where all the songs sound the same to me don't draw big crowds because your only going to draw the crowd that likes that style your playing. For example there this cover band near me that plays everything heavy metal even a Beatles song it will be metal. There talented musicians but they don't draw good crowds because not everyone digs metal. If your in a cover band your trying to please local crowds and you have to give good variety of music to be successful I think. So some one like bensnake uses that pod to be able to get close as possible to a wide range of music styles. The only reason I would want two amps for covers is I prefer to use the amps gain sounds instead of pedals and when I use one amp live I have to use other dirt pedals to get certain tones for some songs. If I was playing big enough stages I would use two amps live so I didn't need the pedals. That's just me though. Playing my originals though I can get away with one amp easy cause well that's my sound ...
I've even noticed a lot of professional bands where the guitar player uses two or even three amps for there tones. How nice would it be to have one amp for cleans and another for crunch and leads... But they usually have miles of stage room.
I'm also speaking as someone who prefers single channel amps so another reason why two make sense for someone like me.

O.K. I get it based on the crowd wanting you to sound just like the original...I wasn't understanding that part of it and that Bensnake was in that type of cover band...makes sense though...

I guess the POD would beat having 30 pedals on a board and lugging a big fender twin around

I don't know for sure that bensnake is in that type of cover band but I'm assuming based on the need for the pod...but yeah exactly right the pod is more convenient for some than an amp and 30 pedals. Personally though I don't think I could give up using a tube amp.
