MXR M117R Flanger - anyone use one?
Since trading a large number of pedals toward my TH100 a few years ago I've been slowly building my effects chain back up. I've been looking to add a modulation pedal (currently running a TC Alter Ego, Hall of Fame and a Boss tremolo in the loop) and I've really enjoyed what I've heard in demo videos of MXR's flanger. It seems like, in addition to great classic flange tones it can be manipulated in a number of ways to sound like other effects (chorus, ring mod) as well, and I'm intrigued by the versatility since I don't really want to have a board with a dozen pedals on it. Does anyone have one and if so what do you think? Also, has anyone tried one of these in a loop, especially with an Orange? I've read some not so great things about how some of the smaller MXR pedals handle effects loops.

Haven't tried one, but it's Eddie Van Halens flange of choice. Reminds me I have a PCB clone I need to build....

Yep, and love it. After going through a number of Flanger pedals the MXR finally was the one. It's very smooth sounding, is the first one I've heard that sounds really good at 'over the top settings' (the other Flangers I owned only were used in a limited range because the extremes never sounded good to my ears) and sounds great through a loop (OR15 in my case).
My preference when using distortion (pedals or amp) is to have it before in the chain. Sounds a lot smoother than after and can really nail EVH-like tones with appropriate amp settings.

I had one years ago and loved it via my Mesa rig; cannot speak thru the Orange's though

I'm using an MXR EVH signature flanger in front of my OR100. Sounds absolutely amazing. Never tried it in the loop though.

If you have a few pedals like that already, and are worried about space, why not sell them and buy something like a Strymon Mobius or a TC electronic G System?

I'm very satisfied with the few effects I'm using and basically just want to add a few more onto that rather than starting over again. My plan is to eventually get an actual pedalboard to tidy up my set up but funds are tight at the moment so I'm taking it one thing at a time.Les Paul Lover wrote:If you have a few pedals like that already, and are worried about space, why not sell them and buy something like a Strymon Mobius or a TC electronic G System?
Thanks for the feedback - I don't know that any of my local stores carry this pedal but hopefully I can find one to test out. The demos I've seen sound incredible in my opinion.

I wonder if this would necessarily be Randy's flange of choice?Jondog wrote:Haven't tried one, but it's Eddie Van Halens flange of choice. Reminds me I have a PCB clone I need to build....

I can only assume that the Tunnelworm would be my favorite flanger, with the Electric Mistress coming in second.
