NAD soon, TH30
New amp coming in. Didn’t plan on buying anything, but I couldn’t refuse the offer: a new TH30 head on heavy discount. Played one a couple of weeks ago and liked it. I think the crunch sounds wasn’t nearly as mediocre as some people say. Perhaps a tiny bit less articulate than my Dual Terror. Great clean and high gain. Well, I’m excited, it should arrive in the beginning of next week.

Re: NAD soon, TH30
Nice job
Head or cab?
Do people say the OD channel is mediocre? I've heard plenty say they really like it. You can't really tell for sure till your spent some quality time using it.
Enjoy!

Head, as stated.
To be more precise: some say it's hard to dial in a convincing light crunch in the dirty channel.
Totally right in spending time with the object.

Nice one. I think that's a very good price. I almost pulled the trigger on one myself, was going to get it when my tax refund came in, but it was sold.

Thank you Bensnake! I will use my PPC212OB. It's my third Chinese Orange after Micro Terror and Dual Terror. Getting bigger and bigger.Bensnake wrote:Congrats and enjoy! I'm sure it's a great amp (never played one myself). What cab are you're gonna use?
But you're far ahead of me Bensnake, with four English amps.

Re: NAD soon, TH30
Congrats!!
The TH30 is a nice little beast.
You'll find that like for the Rockerverb, with 4 gain stages, the delivery of the gain stages can be a bit abrupt, when turning the gain dial, you can turn it up quite a bit with just thickening of the tone and a touch more dirt, and then you get a lot more dirt.... And repeat this 3 times through the dial.
It's very manageable though, and is more progressive than I make it sound.
So yes, managing edge of break up through the dirty channel is not the strong point of that channel, though it can be done. However..... Edge of break up is where that "clean" channel shines at.... As Well as totally clean tones. I say "clean", because it isn't a clean channel, it's a non master volume channel. The volume really is a gain knob without volume control. It has 2 gain stages, and with the volume around 11 o'clock, it is (well loud and glorious) and firmly in edge of break up territory with humbuckers guitars. It's a totally fuzzy break up when you reach it too, as what you get is mostly power valve break up. Totally old school, led zep type tone.

Re: NAD soon, TH30
Thanks, I'm overwhelmed taking part of your knowledge and insight! And for pointing out possibilities to work with. I'm not a huge fan of overdrive pedals, but perhaps that also would be interesting to try with the "clean" channel. I mainly play Strat, but H-S-S, and sometimes a hollow body for controlled feedback. So, both single coils and humbuckers are on the menu.Les Paul Lover wrote:Congrats!!

I used to love OD's and then I bought my first Orange... In general Orange amps aren't nice with overdrive pedals though there're exceptions, especially with the amp's clean channels. However a good clean boost is preferable over a classic OD IMO.

Congrats on the TH30!
I've had mine for nearly a year now (I play it through a PPC212 OB as well) and I love it! Some say it's not the most versatile of amps but it's a doddle to use and does everything I've asked of it from bluesy mellowness to heavy rock without breaking a sweat...and it takes pedals like a dream!

Re: NAD soon, TH30
I really haven't used OD's since the 80's! When Marshalls with master volume and enough gain came around they solved that in a much better way. Tried one or two pedals since that, but no love.Bensnake wrote:I used to love OD's and then I bought my first Orange...
