Fuzz help!!!

Post by MikeD » Mon Mar 16, 2015 9:47 pm

Ok, I need me some fuzz.....I've been listening way too much to rival sons lately and need to add that mouth watering tone to my arsenal!!!

Since I don't know much about the fuzz world I'm putting the question out to you guys...I really love the sound of the big muff and have my eye on a little big muff seeing that I'm working with very little space on my board. Since the RV 50mkll is pretty deep will I be looking at the same tone scenario presented here with a vox AC30?

As said I run a pretty clean set-up with nothing like distortion on my board so let's hear your opinions!!!

It will work..... But only on the clean channel...!!!!

If you can stomach the space it takes, the way huge swollen pickle is a brilliant big muff variant.
It took me a while to work out the tone control part though, as you have 3 pots just to control the tone (one of them internal), but once done its a really really good one. Also totally dead silent as it uses a quad of ICs instead of transistors, and absolutely sick to play.

Otherwise I've been really impressed by the zee woolly mammoth - pretty heavy and dead simple to use, and the fuzz factory. That last one is absolutely mental. Great fun. No idea yet how I'm gonna integrate it in my songs. Just nuts.

Stick to the clean channel. Works well with all the fuzzes I've run it through. I'm a muff fanatic: I've gone through just about 30 variants.
My AC30CC2 has trouble with Big Muffs. They just come out a lot more compressed and the lower strings tend to flub out with most of my standard settings. I usually run a clean booster in back of the big muff, which gives them a little more hair and opens up the treble frequencies a bit: makes them sound a little hollow, throaty and huge.

What are you looking for in a big muff? Wall of sound chords? Smooth, aggressive leads?

Deep, rich fuzz...guessing that would be wall of sound?...I find the full tone in the video too agressive and nasal, I'm hunting for the tone that the big muff produces. I figure if I need nasal I'll just throw in my wah and that should sort that.

...that's the issue....I really only have space for a "regular sized" pedal.

Those late seventies muffs like the one a/b'd with the fulltone just sound incredible.

The problem with these standard big muffs is that their mid scoop really makes them difficult to stand out in a band.

The one I've got on my board currently is a Skreddy P19. It's designed to sound like how you hear big muffs on the albums after studio mastering, with increased mids, reduced bass, and compression and limiting. It's nice and small, but doesn't sound too traditional.

If you want something small that sounds huge and has a classic muff tone. Skip the standard nano or little muff and go for the EHX Bass Big Muff. They are based on the Sovtek Russian Muffs from the early 90s and sound huge. They came out with a nano version recently, too!

If you have a RV MKII, give up on getting a good fuzz sound until you another amp. It can be done on the dirty channel with the gain extremely low, but it makes the amp useless in a real world scenario because you can't switch back to a normal tone.
