I occassionaly play steel in jamsessions and little gigs. These are the two workhorses
1. Fender Dual Pro for ambient and countryish stuff:
2. Old Supro for the bluesssession

Re: Steelguitar anybody?
I don't exactly remember the year but I think it's a '54 or '56 Rickenbacker all original that I can tell. Found it in a random pawn shop for $100.
I can usually dust it off at a gig for two songs. If I were to play it for a 3rd though most of the audience would catch on that I don't really know what I'm doing.

Re: Steelguitar anybody?
I mistakenly thought that it might be tuned to a chord like a lap steel. I didn't realise how important it is to use fingerpicks to pull the chords out. I'm really thinking I might sell it and get a lap steel instead - maybe one with the Duesenberg bridge. Have you seen those?

Whenever I see something like this, my wallet starts twitching and I get GAS. Then I realize that if I bought one, I'd play "One of these days" for about an hour and then never play it again.
Re: Steelguitar anybody?
No, dont sell the pedalsteel!bclaire wrote:I mistakenly thought that it might be tuned to a chord like a lap steel. I didn't realise how important it is to use fingerpicks to pull the chords out. Put only 6 strings on it and tune it to open E (E B E G# B E) and use only one lever or pedal to lower the G# to G for minor chords. When you're comfortable with that start using the A pedal to raise B to C# for the vi chord. Then add another F# string between the E and the G#...
And yes, you'd have to use fingerpicks because string spacing is much narrower than on a lapsteel. Unless you want to play Daniel Lanois style which is awesome too:

Those are pretty cool. I love the sound of them, and wouldn't mind having one, myself. I'm not sure if I could properly play the damned thing or not, though. I guess when all else fails, put it through a Shin Ei Companion fuzz and piss off your neighbors.

If you can find a used one dirt cheap like I did you might find you'll look for opportunities to play it. I know I've gotten a lot of mileage out that $100.Wendigo wrote:Whenever I see something like this, my wallet starts twitching and I get GAS. Plus with as good of a musician as you are Wendigo you might be able to push the envelope past the typical lap steel playing. Robert Randolf comes to mind.
