CR60 story...

Post by Foef » Mon Feb 02, 2015 12:39 pm

So i took it out for a jamsession last night and had a blast with it as usual. But you all know what happens at sessions. So there's this fusion playing friend of mine asking if he can use my amp. He always uses his Mesa Boogie Lonestar Special head with a 2x12 cab. hat an a load of pedals. None of this yesterday. Just guitar, cable, amp. So he sets the volume and afterward he's looking for the standby switch. Was very pleased with the tone and feel of the amp and how well it responds to the volume control. Blown away by the fact that it's a solid state amp. And impressed by the power. There were some loud drummers there and it could keep up with ease. I'm really stoked with this piece of gear.

For a while I played through a Rockerverb MKII 50 that I used to borrow from a mate, I used it more than him because he was/is always teaching in Spain, but I stopped using it after I got my CR120C. The few gigs he played he's asked if he could borrow it. Of course he can, no problems, anytime. I asked him, aside from easy transportation over a Rockerverb and an Orange 4x12, why this and not your Rockerverb... That I use... He just said; 'Because I properly, absolutely love it!'

+1
I'm way past the honeymoon period now and the love has not diminished.
I do wonder how it would play as mini stack with a PPC112 underneath - hmmm...

That's just  guys - cool stories!

How long have I been saying that solid state technology done right can work just fine? Great that Orange really did it right.

Funny thing is that most fellow musicians only know Orange for their valve/tube amps and automatically assume that my CR60C is a tube amp. And i do get a fair amount of compliments for my tone.

Another great thing about solid state is its consintency in tone. They seem less prone to external influences than a tube amp. Bit hard to explain, but i hardly ever feel the need to adjust any settings. Other than the master volume that is.

Well the sounds from the power section won't vary with volume changes nearly as much as with valve amps. Definite advantage of solid state amps right there.

When I first seen one in person, the CR120C variant, I was quite surprised on how big it was. For some reason I was expecting it to be rather compact and diddy, not really sure why. However, at 120watt RMS I was a little intimidated by it, but once I got it out of the boxing and wrapping, plugged straight into it, kept all three volumes below one and gradually worked up little by little, I was surprised on how great it sounds at say, TV/socialising volumes. When it came to kranking it at gigging volumes I was, am, amazed on how clear the amp is and I use the gain well into the 4th stage on occasions with a lot of volume - small, medium gig amp my arse, I'm not sure where the 'large gig' bit went in Orange's description because this thing is loud. I have one of those amp stands (sometimes use it) which holds the amp a couple of foot off of the ground and is angled back a few degrees and, well, I don't like to stand in front of it for too long because it can get rather painful & even then there's still more volume to play with.

With regards to the FX Loop, I have a few pedals, the Mini-Fooger collection by Moog bar the overdrive pedal, with a couple of expression pedals and it takes them incredible well. I don't know if it's just my hearing but it makes a good job of making each pedal sound like what they're designed to sound like. And of course there's a Bogner Uberschall in the front with a TC Electronic tuner. Does the job, my main rig!

I am way past the honeymoon period with my CR60, this is the perfect amp for me, the cleans are what I tried for years to get out of my Rocker 30 with no success. It truely is "Pro" qualty from solidstate technology, simply fantastic.

Ok, for those of you who are owners give it to me straight. How are the cleans? Would they be able to do kind of a jazzy mid scooped clean?

Yes, that is exactly what the majority of what I play is. The eq has a great sweep, very useful.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. If I ever get the opportunity to get with a big band jazz band I may pick up a CR120 head.
