Hi there. I am regular over at www.guitargeek.com, but I need your expert help.

Here's what I am using now...
Guitars: Tele w/custom SD Hotrail & Les Paul w/custom SD JB
Effects: Boss TU2, Ibanez FL9, Fulltone FDII, Vox/Keeley Wah, Ibanez AD9, Boss/Tone-Jam Sniper GE7.
Amp: 1978 Marshall JMP 50w w/Red Bear 4x12 (Celestion G12L35's)

I am trying to forge a big, bad, organic hard rock tone. I am very happy with how I sound now. I am looking to expand on my sound though (cover more of the sonic spectrum), and I was thinking about adding a Vox AC30 for the longest time...

But I read a Guitar World (March 2002) review of the AD30TC and I have been drooling since (I have many years of issues, and I reread them all the time). I just read the reviews at http://www.guitarist.co.uk/default.asp and www.harmonycentral.com this morning and am shaking - I am positive that the AD30TC oozes tone out of every nook and cranny.

But how will it "play" with my JMP? I plan on running both simultaneously using a www.loooper.com ABY switch. Good idea ?
It will be loud enough, right ?
It will be a good blend, no ?
Any phasing issues (and please explain) ?

Argh...I am losing sleep and my girlfriend is being neglected while I ponder tone. Please help me !!!!

Thanks.

Here's the deal: they will work fine together under one condition- you play them both full out all of the time. If you are the kind of guitarist who backs off on the volume of the guitar to use the amp as it was really intended, then you are going to be disappointed and realise the limitations of your Marshall. Marshalls just aren't the amp that an Orange is. This is coming from a guy with 4 Marshalls currently. I used to do the very thing- run two amps simultaneously- a Marshall and an Orange, but unless you're running them both full out, forget it. However, if you're happy with them both full bore and your guitar all the way up, it IS an awesome sound. You'll kill people but what the heck...

Thanks bclaire !!!!

I do not really play with my volume knobs much - I did on my Tele, but my singer uses that guitar for now. I keep the volume and tone on the Paul dimed...thank God for the FDII !!!

I was hoping to just temporarily paralyze people with the tone - killing a few would be sweet !!!

As a current owner of an AD30TC, I think you should definitely buy one...but then use your AB box to try some different combinations. I've used my Orange coupled with a Boogie MKIIC as well as my Marshall and Fender heads. If you could score a Bad Cat head and use that in a loop with your Orange head, you'd be in heaven!

OK, but here's a dilemma for you....

Channel switching amps: if you decide to run a channel switching Orange with another channel switching amp, like say, a Marshall for instance and you figure out how to channel switch the two amps simultaneously, you're going to discover something ugly. The Orange maintains the phase when the amp is switched.... the Marshall does not- presto- two amps out of phase with each other, one of the weirdest stereo field effects you will ever encounter and totally useless. The only solution would be to channel switch the Orange only.... just a little heads-up. Billy

AD30 clean sound: good enough to set up next to.. say a Dual Rec and sound Voxy or better for A/B/Y switch purposes?
Gear:
'93 Gibson Les Paul Standard
Breedlove Studio C250/EO
Mesa Stiletto Ace
Mesa Vertical 2x12
CAE wah, Pitchblack, BB Preamp, Timmy, DM-2W
