CR-60Pro...

Post by Companyman » Sun Dec 21, 2014 5:02 pm

Hi everyone, been a while since I've posted. I have owned a Rocker30 combo, Root Terror and an OR15 in the past but had to liquidate assets after losing my job, sad days indeed...

Fast forward a couple of years and I have some work and squirreled away some money, but not near enough for the Rockerverb 50 that I really want, so I decided to give the CR60c a shot after seeing the Rob Chappers demo on Youtube. I have to say it was a huge surprise how FRICKENFANTASTIC this amp sounds! I have had a Marshall 5210 solidstate JCM800 series amp that was great sounding, but this CR60 is hands down the best SS amp I have ever played! I am very excited about this amp, and the reverb is really great sounding too!

Thanks! I have to say, the thought of not dealing with tube replacement and the sensitivities of tube amps is appealing to me, Orange has outdone themselves with the CrushPro Series.

The responsiveness of the dirty channel when rolling back the volume reacts just like a tube amp, very impressive.

Hard luck on the job front, hope you get back up and running sooner rather than later!

I don't think Rob Chappers did these amazing amps justice, not that he often does on most things he demos anyway. I had to cringe when he stated it's a "great backup" for a Rockerverb or an amplifier to use in unsavoury places... Urgh... Twit...

...Anyhow, I love the CR120C version. It does everything and anything I need it for, and after playing through a friend's Rockerverb MKII 50 for a long time and more often that he did, I found the CR120C to easily take over its use. It's just fantastic.

Sounds fantastic kranked way up too. As a Solid State amp I was expecting it to be muddy when pushed but, it's just very clear. Crystal clear.

I have a CR60C as well. It is simply awesome and tube like in its response. Compared directly to amps such as an OR15 and Vintage Modern it doesn’t quite have the complexities of a tube amp but is about 95% there. Probably a bit unfair comparing it directly with different amps though, but it is unnoticeable when played in isolation. Really just another amp with it’s own distinctive, tube-like flavour. It certainly does have that Orange mid range thing happening though.

Other advantages are its relatively lightweight and portable and hopefully more confidence with reliability due to not having to deal with potentially finicky tubes. Way cheaper than equivalent Orange tube amps too. All round winner IMO.

I spent the better part of the day playing it, I put my TRex Reptile II delay in the effects loop and it sounded so 3 dimensional and lush, really am satisfied with this purchase.

Hi Companyman. Welcome back! :D

Glad to hear that you are back up and running and so happy with the amp. The fact that it compares so well to your old '80s s.s. Marshall says a lot. Those were some of the best made and best sounding s.s. amps ever made!

I've yet to read or hear a negative comment/review about these Crush Pro amplifiers. There's a Youtube channel called Oldhatguitars on... Well, Youtube. :P It's basically a channel showing a lot of rare and vintage guitars and amplifiers that are in 'like brand new' condition, incredible. For most of the time the guy (Norman I believe he's called, and an amazing guitarist) plays through an Orange CR120H plugged into an Orange PPC4x12, and when he reviewed the amplifier itself he stated it is the best amplifier he has ever played through. For someone that has access to a lot of pretty amazing amplifiers it is certainly high praise, and owning a CR120C myself it is absolutely understandable.

Later in the new year I'm going to purchase a Matchless Hot Box III. It will sound pretty 'effin awesome with the two tubes and the great voicing of the CR120H, plus two extra channels to play with too. Happy days!

Just out of curiosity. Any one that owns a CR60C, CR120C or a CR120H, how are you finding it [them] at high volumes, fully kranked or as load as you can take it?

Are you finding your Crush Pro to be clear, both on clean and dirty channels, break up nicely or badly or do you think they start to sound muddy at higher volumes?

I ask because a few of my fellow guitar playing chums that have heard mine think it sounds great, even a little envy showing, HA!, and since most other 'professional' Solid State amps I've used start to sound dull when pushed. I just wonder if I've got a really great one in a batch or they're just generally very ruddy good.

Thats exciting to here. Even if it is only 95 percent there in your opinion. If a solid state can be that close, for that price range, that it awesome. I have become a tube amp snob myself, just because there has not been really great SS options over the years, But the crush series has me wanting to get one as a backup. I would still gig with my Rocker 30 .. but If something were to occur and I had an affordable option ..... that sounds exciting.

Another vote for the CR60C here as well...
I snapped one up shortly after they were introduced and it quickly became my go-to amp. So much so that I moved on my OR15 as it was just gathering dust.
@ Vertikal - mine displays no dullness when cranked hard - just the opposite in fact. I use it with the single coil setup on my Ric and a 'bucker on my G&L and while it has it's own Orangey voice it also allows the sound of the guitars/pups to shine through.
Really like the 'Voice of the World' drivers as well, kinda like the V30's but seem a little more mellow to me.

I'm way past the honeymoon period with this amp and I think it truly deserves the 'Orange' name - probably the best SS amp circuitry I've heard or been lucky enough to own. Seems to be pretty bullet proof too - we have crazy overvoltage over here sometimes (285v anyone?) and no problems so far.

Cheers - hope y'all had a good Christmas/Festive Season/Whatever...
