Alright kids! Tesla el34's(37) coming my way
Welded plates, brown base, 37 mid 70's
I'm turning 40 this on Halloween and said to myself; you know what? I never tried a cool NOS(or ANOS) power tube. So I said screw it and found some killer brown base 37's
Anyone have any experience with throwing old stock tubes in a 90's 120?
I can't find much about it. I've Plenty of preamp tubes, mullard, rft, long plate tung-sol, etc...

Teslas were very good EL34s, extremely close to old Mullard good. That's what has been in my OR120 for many years. Big and bold and biased right (coolish) they will last very well too.
Lucky you!
Andy.

I'd love to know if you can hear a difference and if it is an improvement!

Ditto!Ronnie Robinson wrote:I'd love to know if you can hear a difference and if it is an improvement!
But let us know if the old valves being replaced were on the way out too - just so we know what you compare them to!

Will do. It's got some jj e34l's in it right now that are about to crap the bed. They are coming from Polzka so be a couple of weeks.

Well if what you have in there are knackered these NOS valves MUST be an improvement!Igneous wrote:Will do. It's got some jj e34l's in it right now that are about to crap the bed. They are coming from Polzka so be a couple of weeks.

haha. Indeed! I replaced two with others from the bin, so ya....
Re: Alright kids! Tesla el34's(37) coming my way
Okay I'm back! So I get the quad, nicely wrapped etc, two of them don't work. The guy Igor in Poland replaced them and shipped them really fast. I think there must be a direct flight there and back or something. Anyway, popped the new ones in and ! YES! They do what everyone says they do. I had the e34l's in there for comparison. Which were cool too. So, great string articulation,(I'm used to having unforgiving amps) top end is there but not too chimey. The low end is huge and ...strong I would say. Especially in the upper lows. More present. The mids are finally calmed down a bit! I didn't know if they were gonna be even more pronounced or not but nope.
Just all around great. When the new ones came I gently slid them in next to their new family and put it on standby overnight. I'm still having them get acquainted. Bias was simple. Not too much different than the JJ's, actually. A little colder. Not too much though. Worth it as long as they last...
I need a better video but here I am drunk with one hand strumming my setup. It sounds great on its own dirt but here I push it with a 78 Dist+ script into a pharaoh.

Isn't that a 70s amp? The knobs and logo look 70s to me.

The one in my sig is a 76 or80
In the video, it is on the bottom. I changed the headcase as I use the 120 to compete with my bandmates triple rec.

The 80 has kt88's in it. Different beast altogether.
Anyway, brought it down to practice last night and it just dominated. I really have no concerns about dialing awesome sound now. And I love it! Its not that the e34l's weren't awesome with it, it's just different but in a more solid feeling. I like the grind it gets MUCH better than with new production though.
(I have two matched chinese ax7b's for preamp tubes. I wanted something strong in that section as the Mules and amperex didn't seem to have enough balls)
I also use the lo input.
