Don't do this
Listening to the sound clips on his website it sounds like the mods he does suck all of the tone out of the amp. So that isn't a good idea.

Re: Don't do this
Good lord.... talk about ruining a great amp....
Re: Don't do this
I've actually had a couple of my amps repaired by this guy. He does really fantastic amp repair. I believe he used to be a builder for Mesa's high-end amps for many years. He's super skilled and knows what he's doing.
As for this mod... yeah, I'm not too sure. I honestly don't care for either of the tones, before or after the mod. The mod seems to just have more gain (which I don't think is really needed, but could be achieved with a pedal). Then again, listening on computer speakers is always bad... maybe it sounds good in person.

That's it really. The mod makes it sound like more a Marshall gone badly wrong through the wrong speakers. Lightweight.Bensnake wrote:Do you care for Orange tone at all?0000 wrote:I honestly don't care for either of the tones, before or after the mod.
Daresay he knows how to solder better than I can. But even the best can make mistakes it seems!0000 wrote:I've actually had a couple of my amps repaired by this guy. Which 'high end' Mesas though? May be wrong but I hadn't heard of any special 'Custom Shop' type special lines. (Special custom cabs yeah, but I'm talking about the amp guts.)
Whatever you think of the sounds Mesas were basically always high end amps in terms of design, components and build. All PCB builds AFAIK, but top quality PCB builds. (With the complexity of most of the circuits PCB was the only practical way to go.)
My own wee 1x10 Subway combo is just as well built as any of their bigger amps were. In fact when interviewed once by a mate of mine in Scotland Randall Smith (Mr. Mesa) said that the main reason the Subways were dropped was that they were 'too well built' for what Mesa could realistically ask for a 20W amp. They were pretty expensive amps new right enough but still not cost effective to produce. (Basically they were too good to survive!!!) ( )
Might just be hearing a bit of 'Mesa gone wrong' along with the 'Marshall'? On second thoughts, nah doubt it! That TV mod really sounds pretty bad. Dearie me!

I totally agree. But 0000 doesn't care for the tone before the mod either. That's confusing me since he's participating in an Orange forum. Maybe he just doesn't care for the TV tone, I don't know.a.hun wrote:That's it really. The mod makes it sound like more a Marshall gone badly wrong through the wrong speakers. Lightweight.

Also mybe he doesn't like the recordings. A bad recording with bad mic placement can make even the best amp sound crappy.Bensnake wrote:I totally agree. Re: Don't do this
Of course. Orange's tone is one that always stands out so distinctly from the rest and is so easily recognizable when heard. However, I don't find the tone of any of those recordings to be that pleasing (especially after the mod)... I just don't care for that tight, buzzy, "can of bees" super high-gain type distortion. Much prefer the more loose, warm, vintage sounding Orange tone over the modern. Just personal preference.Bensnake wrote:Do you care for Orange tone at all?0000 wrote:I honestly don't care for either of the tones, before or after the mod.
Surely that type of tone he desires perfectly matches his aesthetics and obvious taste in glam rock metal. Tight leather pants, Floyd Roses on every guitar, celtic tattoos, Peavey 5150's, etc...

Re: Don't do this
The midrange was nice and focused before the mod. With the mod engaged, the amp is too bright, and lost all the stout focused midrange. Maybe it could be a desirable mod for bedroom players, but i'd be surprised if that sounds better in a band context (which is where you use a high powered amp like this).
Granted i'm only listening on laptop speakers, but I don't hear more low end, as the website claims. It's also fizz city. The stock amp didn't have that white noise garbage going on.
