what 2x12 cabinet with dual terror head
Hi guys,
I've a DT30H and actually I'm running with a 4x10 vintage marshall. What a great sound!
However I'd like to buy also a 2x12 cabinet. What do you think about Harley Benton G212 Vitage with V30 speakers on Thomann.de? Value for money?
Have you any advice for right 2x12 cabinet with this head?
Thank you so much.

I find it very difficult to beat that deal. Should contend just fine with the top shelf for half the price. Try running it on its side for a wider projection.

Thanks for reply snickerpuss.
Some people say that the 2x12 hb cab is pretty dark' / close? (sorry for correct terms) in the midrange...but maybe it's the V30 key feature I think...what you think about that?
However I'm lucky because a friend of mine has that cab..so I can try it!

Ive never used the HB Cab you mention, but not all cabs are created equal. Buy a second hand Orange 212 then you know its up to the job....

Re: what 2x12 cabinet with dual terror head
Well, from my experience, vintage 30s spike my upper mids, which is why I like them with Orange. This tends to brighten and add a little presence. It's all depending on your preferred eq settings and musical styles, though. I tend to prefer open back cabs just because I like the more open, 3d sound. You lose a lot of bass with an open back, but I typically set my bass earlier than 12 for that wispy Page tone.fedepepo wrote:Thanks for reply snickerpuss.

Jondog's suggestions are great cabs. The PPC212OB angles the speakers slightly diagonally in the more compact cab which helps spread the sound into that less directional, 3d sound. I'm a big fan.
Still, for a third of the price, you gotta try your bud's harley benton.

Re: what 2x12 cabinet with dual terror head
The HB is great value I guess - the speakers would set you back nearly as much alone. Don't know quite how good it sounds though. (Agree, not all cabs are created equal!)
Main problem I see though is that it is an 8 ohm cab, meaning that you couldn't use a second cab with it. For that they both need to be 16 ohm cabs. However if it sounds fine to you and is loud enough for your need on it's own than go for it.
And +1, putting standard 2x12 cabs on their side (so the speakers are vertical) hugely improves the sound spread across both stage and audience.
Andy.

Re: what 2x12 cabinet with dual terror head
Hi Andy,
simply, having a 4x10 cab with greenback speakers, I'd like a 2x12 only for better portability and versatility depending on the gig...so I would not need the 16 ohm input! But that's theory!
And what about differences between Greenback and V30 speakers? Seconds are more "mid scooped" than GB? But with more bass range?
Meantime I'll try HB 2x12 just out couriosity...after, I'll try others cabs and I'll do the hard choise!

Re: what 2x12 cabinet with dual terror head
well with 212s they can be very bulky and heavy, such is my orange 212 closed back cab! it sounds great though. a lot better than an open back cab for the music I play. I do want another one though that is lighter...with neodymiums ....

i use an avatar 2x12. much lighter than an orange cab and way cheaper. mine are loaded with v30s at 8 ohms each and i use a stereo jackplate that lets me go 16 ohm mono / 4 ohm mono / 8 ohm stereo. much more flexible since i have various other amps besides orange ones.

There'll probably be a lot of tonal difference between your 4x10 and a V.30 loaded 2x12.fedepepo wrote:Hi Andy,

["Greenbacks"??? Exactly how vintage is that cab, which 10" drivers are loaded? Real vintage Marshall 4x10s came with 15 watt 7442s for a 60W cab. Later ('80s) you'd find G10L-35s. Both are great though the earlier lower wattage ones are really special. There were likely others in between too.]
Generally though you aren't talking any mid scoop with either these tens or with V.30s. The most noticeable thing about V.30s is that they have a fairly obvious upper midrange peak. That can be too harsh with some toppier amps, but works well with Oranges. Bass is tight and firm, not especially huge. Mids are thick and dominated by that upper mids peak. Treble is present but not all that in your face. They are speakers which stay clean even when pushed pretty hard. So no early cone breakup like earlier vintage Celestions.

Re: what 2x12 cabinet with dual terror head
Thanks for the explanation Andy!
My cab is '80s vintage...speakers are 30w G10...! Are not greenback speakers?
Sorry maybe I'm wrong..?

Re: what 2x12 cabinet with dual terror head
Hi guys! last evening I tried the HB cab with my DT30H and It sounds very good.
More mid-bass harmonics and, generally, a more "punched" sound compared to my 4x10"! Even at half power (15 watt) speakers works very well, sound is always clear, maybe little more brighter!
I'll take a little time to try others cabs that you reccommended me and then, I'll decide!
But, believe me, HB cab 2x12 sounds very very good!
