Is it possible to make 15W amp louder ?

Post by 666dodik666 » Tue Jun 17, 2014 9:36 am

I am thinking about buying Jim Root Orange head, but from my experience I can tell that 15W will not be loud enough for me. Is there a way how to make it louder by somehow connecting to another amp in which I would just use the tone of the Orange head, but could use e.g. 50W power of the amp it is connected to? Cheers

Could you try to get a RV50 2nd hand from somewhere?

too much money for me. I am trying to keep the budget as low as possible as we do not play that often. I was just trying to see if that is possible to do.

You could use the effects loop as a line out. Or get a Badcat Unleash.

I have read about the effect loop. Will it alter the tone? That badcat looks like something really good as well.

You'll just have the preamp section. If the amp you are thinking of running into has an effects loop or power amp in, thats where you'll run it into. I've heard good things about the BadCat Unleash.

I believe you will still need to have a speaker load on the JR Terror even if you're using the preamp via the loop.

maybe consider a laney aor 100 used

or if you need more gain a peavey 5150 used

there is no substitute in a band setting for tube amp "umph"!

unless you go the modeler route and FRFR/monitors

I am not really looking for anything different. I have modified Bugera, which is pretty close to 6505+ and I like it a lot, but when I played on the Terror, I preffered it much more.

Connect the little head to a 4X12 with extremely efficient speakers - like these !

I have a BadCat Unleash with a Tiny Terror. I use it mainly for the effects loop and volume switching.

The million dollar age old question is:
How loud is a 100 Watt solid state power amp compared to a 15 / 50 / 100 Tube power amp?

I personally do not think that the 100 Watt solid state BadCat Unleash will make a 15 Watt tube amp much if any louder than it already is by itself.

How long is a piece of string?

Usually 100W s.s. is (roughly) sonically comparable to around 40W valve - through similar speakers. Depends on the individual amps of course, and whether you are talking clean or driven. While with some s.s. amps it is a much closer thing typically you'll need around 2 - 3 times the wattage for similar effect compared to valve output sections.

Exceptions:

I'd imagine that Bad Cat will have spent a bit more time on this s.s. reamp design than many. I can't see it not giving a noticeable volume boost to a TT. But personally if possible I'd always try to find an amp of the right sort of wattage for the job in the first place.
