HB sized P90 options?

Post by mr_william » Sun Jun 15, 2014 3:39 pm

So I'm looking to overhaul my Les Paul and I'm looking for opinions on HB sized P90s.

I recently borrowed a Tele with P90's from a friend and the output was good, rolling back cleaned up nicely.

looking on ebay, i can go from £38 for a set from vansons? through to gibson p94's at around £150 for the set when all's said and done...

the duncan phat cats are covered and i'd like to go for this aesthetic, so this may rule them out?

tone riders? phil x's px100?

any advice on what effects the different magnets will have? alnico 2, 5 and 8 all seem to be used?
Will.

BAREKNUCKLE P90's, hands down, the best.

You have three different tonal option with them. They describe the tone of each quite well.

I personally use the normal P90 "Blue Note", as I desired more focus on the high treble spectrum with my semi-hollow body guitar which was already quite fat and full sounding.

I'd say BKP as well. Love my Piledriver and Nailbomb sets.

I have been pretty happy with the DiMarzio Bluesbucker, which is designed to sound like a P-90 (though it looks like a humbucker and does buck hum). It sounds and feels like a cross between a PAF and a P-90 for the most part. It doesn't get really nasty (in a good way) like a P-90 can, so it's not a direct substitute. I'm not sure what my point was...

The Bareknuckle Mississippi Queen is hands down my favourite.

I have previously used the GFS Dream 90/Mean 90 combo however I have to say that, whilst at the start they sounded good, they really deteriorated in tone over the course of a year and a bit. Probably a fault in the production.

SD P-Rail!

So good, I love it in my RD Custom. You can get a pickup bezel that allows you to switch it between the three positions too. very cool. lovely tones.

I second the SD P Rails. I put them in my semi hollow and love them for the p90 sound.

I've got a Supermassive neck humbucker sized P90 from Bare knuckle pickups which i absolutely love. My first P90, but definitely not the last. The cleans are like a super fat single coil when you roll back a little on the volume, and it's excellent at retaining clarity and definition. It took some fiddling around to get it to deliver a crunch/distortion that pleased my ears, but this being a very hot PU, and my first P90 ever, I just consider it a bonding phase..

Having tried SD (not the p-rail though), dimarzios and other common brands I can say that it would take a lot of convincing to get me back to factory made pickups. It's like whiskey, except the bottle never gets empty! ;)

what about the gibson p94's. That is what I would go with personally, as they are so many options I get frustrated with it and figure the 94's can't sound bad.

I have tried both the Phat Cat and the P94.
Personally the P94 wins! I'm a big fan of the Gibson pick-ups in general.

There are a lot of options out there. You can contact Bareknuckles, give the specs of the guitar, amp, what tones you want and they will suggest what BarknucklePU you can use!

I have a GIbson P94. It doesn't sound bad honestly, but it just lack character when compared to the couple BK's I have. I'd say it's rather just flat on the EQ and neutral sounding. Compared to the BK's, it has less sustain as well.

I have SD p-rails in my Les Paul together with the Triple Shot mounting rings. I love them.
