I think if you played a pix only and a pix-and-text OR120 side by side, you'd like the Pix Only better. However, the pix-and-text would be waaaaay cheaper, and alone you might forget the difference.

man i really want a pics only. but theyre so expensive. the one i was playing is priced at 2000 and it obviously has some issues. including plexi chipped at the corners. what would i be looking to pay for one in decent condition? ive got dough, there arnt many of these out there

You just gotta wait for one to come along. I missed one on my local craigslist a couple years ago for $650. I could still kick myself....

Any nice OR120 will be a fantastic amp when and where you can actually run it loud enough to sound great. They don't really kill until set loud enough though, and for guitar that's pretty damn loud.
Yeah, who wouldn't love a nice Pics Only, but I've never had any complaints about my '78 Overdrive...
Reeves = good. Any of the few Harry Joyce own name ones done in his last years would also be a real find. But just go Audio Bros (or preferably vintage) if you can find one. Biacrowns weren't bad amps, even the later PCB ones were high quality. But yeah they'd shifted away from the classic circuit designs and diluted something in the process. I'd always prefer a classic 4-holer Hylight myself and try to find one that MG hadn't magically created from an old PA amp or some such...
Big +1 on the 50 watters being loud too. Hiwatts sound plain big and present at any volumes and their 50 watters will shame many / most 100s by anyone else. My DR103 (100W) is a real tone monster for bass, guitar, anything really, and also sounds great at living room volumes. Beautiful amps - the real deal.

Nicely understated guys. 'Scuse me if either of you disagree, but unfortunately still going I'd say. Sorry to be negative but those Music Ground scumbags (father and son both) who got the Hiwatt rights many moons back should have been locked up years ago IMO. (No, seriously! Just read about them on the forum mentioned and you'll understand why...)OrangePaul wrote:They are made by the one and only music ground
Their shops had troubles recently but they managed to keep the HiWatt business going..

Re: loud and clean!!! or120 vs od120
I had no idea Hiwatt had such a lurid and storied history. I thought they just went out of business and then got purchased by someone and came back out. I nearly bought a used one a few years ago, but decided against it as I thought it was just too loud for my purposes. it was supposedly from the 80's???? (that's what the guy said) so who knows what model or maker it came from.
Now I know, if in the market for a Hiwatt, get more info and guarantees.

They're basically clones of the mid 70's orange heads, same circuit and everything. Surprisingly few corners were cut in their construction, the PCB and the wiring is actually better quality and neater in the 90's reissues. I love my '94 OR120.Gash/bite wrote:hey whats up with the 90s reissue or120s? any good?
