NAD!!!

Post by burnscs » Thu May 08, 2014 3:17 pm

Whelp I didn't need it, but there was a great deal on an AD30r combo so I pounced. It's sitting in the car now waiting to get put through the motions in 8 hours! I already have an AD30htc that will probably be hitting the swap sheets, but I'm dying to see how close the reverb is to my OR80's reverb.

Pics or it didn't happen:

Ah sweet. I came across a NOS AD30R combo in a shop here, and though I'm more a Rocker 30 man I was pretty interested. Lovely amp, congratulations on that.

So how does it compare tonally to the TC channels do your think? Closer to one or the other or somewhere in-between?

Hopefully the reverb will be at least as nice as on your OR80. (How is that anyway? They were pretty rare with reverb, no?)

7 1/2 hours and counting... :D

Haven't played the new one yet, but I'll report back! I LOVE the reverb on the OR80, it goes from a subtle echo to full on Ariel under the sea chunky goodness. The beginning of this song shows a little of it:

Cheers for that. Probably the first time I've heard an OR's own reverb. Does sound tasty!

Nah, kind of a long story.

The OR80r is a combp amp from the 70's with gold back speakers. I was on the road using is and was weary about damaging the 212 combo cab, so I took out the head and put it into the ad30 shell and screwed the reverb box into the bottom of a ppc212ob. That was the head can travel safely in the ad30 flight case and I don't need to worrk about dinging up or losing a cab that's pretty much irreplaceable. That's why the AD30 is just sitting there all lonely.

The AD30r's reverb is very subtle - full on it probably is still more subtle that the Rockerverb's on the 1st notch iirc. It still is a nice reverb, and I like my amps to have reverb. Oh, and the Rockerverb's reverb is pretty mental too. I love it, but bear that in mind re: my comparison.

Yeah you don't see many of them kicking around on craigslist or on eBay too much.

Alright, so I'm a little disappointed in the reverb. It sounds great without overdrive but then get really lost with gain and with my OCD. Amp sounds great though with the gain cranked and the OCD full volume and no gain. Sounds even better paired with my 412ppc with vintage 30's. I'm going to put it through the paces with my or412(g12t-75 speakers) tomorrow. The reverb isn't that bad, just not in the same league as or80r. The overdrive sounds different with high and lo inputs. Almost like you still get both ad30htc channels. To be honest besides subtle voicing difference with the htc both channels sound very similar to me anyways.

I though you might be underwhelmed by its reverb - it is a bit subued.

It's very usable though, the only thing being that you need to set it quite high. Cant really comment on the reverb playing with OD pedals.
What I could say is that' I've built a reverb pedal for my AD15. Like you, I found it sounds great, but doesn't play well with amp overdrive or OD/Fuzz pedals.....
