Marshall 1974x
Hi guys, Sorry about my long absence (its been a few years!) I am currently looking into buying a Marshall 1974x and was just wondering what sort of success people had with swapping out tubes and speakers and stuff like that! I never really experimented that much with my old AD30TC but I will probably get more into it with this little 18 watter! Also feel free to use this thread as a way to say "whats up"

Re: Marshall 1974x
Ha ha, yeah I wish Orange made a low watt, classic low gain 1x12 combo! (the tiny terror is not my kind of style!) however a single channel AD18 would go down nicely!!!
Re: Marshall 1974x
The easy answer is an OR15 swapped into a Tiny Terror combo cab. Or look around for an AD15 combo.
Re: Marshall 1974x
Well your in luck minus 3 watts! Perhaps you look into the orange AD15? Check out my picture, They are amazing 1x12 or 1x10 combos 15 watt class A amps! Single channel with gain and master controls with a 3 band eq. Clean through medium gain. Great blues and rock amp! Made in england! They are so nice I had to get more than one.

That is a nice amp, they are a bit hard to come by though! I am looking at the marshall because it is brand new (with warentee etc) and 18 watts of pure low gain tone (I should be able to crank it in the living room without the windows exploding!) and all through a nice greenback!
P.S I also don't fancy building a frankenamp Jongog

Re: Marshall 1974x
I don't think I've played the 1974x, so I got nothing else! Nice looking amps though.
Re: Marshall 1974x
From everything that I've read, and having had the chance to jam on one at a local music store, I probably wouldn't change a thing. They sound really good as-is. The (English made) Celestion speaker in them were made to be paired with it, and they sound really good with some nice early breakup. Not sure what the tubes are, but that's a higher end Marshall, being hand wired. So I'm guessing they're not your run of the mill unmarked Chinese tubes.

Re: Marshall 1974x
No idea about the 1974x either, but AD15 / 12 come up reasonably often on ebay, with anything between £300/350 being a fair price. I picked one up 18 months ago in Birmingham, great amp.
Welcome back anyway! Where are you in the UK? What do you want to use your future amp for?

Hey LPL, I'm just outside SW London mate, as for usage, it will mainly be used for living room playing, we are lucky enough to live in a house with a large living room (also the house is detached) so I can crank it without any problems! Also I may gig it in the future but it depends how things go. I would love to get another AD30 but you just can't crank that kind of amp in a living room situation.

Re: Marshall 1974x
I would have thought the G12m greenback would be the ideal match for this amp or possibly the celestion blue?

Re: Marshall 1974x
Back in my pre Orange days I almost bought a 1974x. I was a Vintage Modern owner looking to down size and was on the Vintage Modern forum and expressed my interest in one . I had tried one at a local shop and liked it a lot. One of the Marshall designers , who's name I forgot, was on the forum and said wait until I tried Class 5. I waited until they got one , didn't like it much, but the store had an OR50 that I tried, liked ,bought , and have had ever since. That wasn't downsizing , I know, but the 1974x IS a nice amp, but once you go Orange, you never go back . At least for me.
ps
Also tried a Rocker 30 that day , also very nice!

Nice amp, the 1974. However, good luck "cranking it in the livingroom". That's gonna be a bit uncomfortable.

Re: Marshall 1974x
So a Marshall designer discourages you from a $2000 hand wired amp and tells you to wait and try their $400 class 5. And then you end up with orange... Don't think he will be getting employee of the year or anything.Eddie Famine wrote:Back in my pre Orange days I almost bought a 1974x. I probably was stressing about the price when he suggested the Class 5. The OR 50 head was a BIT less, but I bought the Orange 2 12 cabinet too, so I went over budget as well as not downsizing.
