Recording tonight with AD30

Post by JF3 » Fri Jan 31, 2014 3:05 pm

I'm recording with my AD30 for the first time tonight and tomorrow - can't wait. Music is garagey-rock, I'm thinking I crank it up and double track left and righ for basic rhythm, maybe varying channel. Eq as needed depending on how it sounds in the mix. We'll be at a studio so people who know what they're doing running the show.

Any words of advice from you orange masters out there? Oh, guitar is a strat with humbucker in the bridge.

I guess my only advice would be if it's garage rock, I might not double guitars too much. Keep is sorta simple and raw, and maybe not use tons of gain, allow some jangle in there. I guess it depends what kind of "garage rock" you mean. Have fun and best of luck in the studio to you!

+1 to this. Only double track if the song really calls for it, dont just do it for every song. Some songs will sound better doubled and others wont, just use your ears, trial and error. If its garage rock keep it raw sounding not over produced.

it will sound gainier recorded than in real life so don't be afraid to back off the gain a bit

If you have the chance to try out a few different cabs/speakers, give them a try to see which you like best. Good luck and give us a sample once you have something!

Thanks for all the advice. Went great, I ended up on ch 2 for most of the rhythm, it just sounded edgier, brighter, and more alive - fit these songs better. Few more sessions over the next few months (schedules, ugh) and we'll get it out there!

Exciting times!

Did you get to hear some of the mix?
How helpful were the studio staff? I hear some do their own things, some are very good at letting you do your thing...!!!
