PPC212OB vs. PPC212C

Post by DrPhobic » Sat Dec 14, 2013 8:16 pm

I recently acquired a Rocker 30 with a PPC212C. I'd like to get a second 212, but I was wondering if anyone else has used both the 212C & 212OB together and what they think.

I'd do it, mix a open and closed back. I'd probably put the closed on the bottom and open on top.

I've only used closed-back cabs my whole life, until recently got an open-back cabinet and feel in love with the more dispersed, airiness to the sound it created. I don't think I'll go back to a closed-back ever again.

PPC212OB vs. PPC212C

I'm pretty sure it would sound great. While I don't have that exact mix, I recently bought a PPC212OB and have a PPC112 Closed back stacked on top of it and the 2 sound great together. I did some testing between my open back cab and my other closed back cabs, and it seems like the open back just loses a bit of tightness/clarity at higher gain settings (3 o'clock or higher on the TV50), so it would probably be roughly the same for the Rocker 30. This isn't nearly as noticeable if you have a closed back cab stacked with it though.

Just a warning though that the 2 cabs have different dimensions in case you were going for a symmetrical look when stacking them. The PPC212OB is quite a bit smaller and lighter than the closed back.

Thank you! I was leaning towards going for it. I think it might look nice to have a pyramid/triangular look to the stack.

I say do it. I have a vertical slant mesa cab and an orange open back and they complement each other well, you will get the best of both worlds by having both and more flexibility than a 412 with being able to seperate the two as well as being a bit lighter than a 412
