OR15H with PPC108 cab?? (home use)
Hi guys
I'm about to buy a OR15H but mainly play at home so decibel levels are capped... I'm a bit worried that it would be too loud in 7watt mode with a 112 cab...
I know using the ppc108 (8inch speaker) would be a compromise and wouldn't get the most out of the amp vs a 112 or 412 but...
For home levels could I achieve good tone at lower volumes than with a bigger speaker?

You will really be better off with the PPC112!

I wouldn't go for the 108. Even at lower volumes, you still gonna want that "thump" in your sound and you will probably not achieve that with such a tiny cab. Go for a 112!
For the record; I've never listened to or played a 108. But the physical laws tell me I'm right...![Cool 8)](./images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)

Sounds unanimous then.
I'm actually going to play it through my 112 combo's speaker to begin with before deciding on which amp to keep.
Bowled over by the OR15 tone on Andertons video..

Speaker efficiency is going to play a big roll as to how "loud" you'll be at home. Can't hurt to search around for a 112 with a Celestion G12M25. I think it has one of the lowest efficiencies on the market and it will sound great!

Re: OR15H with PPC108 cab?? (home use)
Please go with a PPC112 - running the OR15 through a 108 will be deeply unsatisfying. What you have in your favour is that the OR15 sounds very good at low levels (through a V30 loaded PPC112 in my case). You'll need to be a bit gentle on the volume pot though - it can go from subtle low level to structural damage very easily... enjoy
The biggest problem you'll have is breaking in a V30 (from which it really benefits) - so maybe an alternative driver may be a good way to go. The physical size of the 108 cab means it will always have a tendency towards boxiness and no low end.
Hope this helps - and enjoy.

Yep. Or one of these would work too.
http://www.thomann.de/gb/vox_v112nt.htm
It certainly won't be quiet but it will be less loud than say a V30. Another option would possibly be to get the Orange PPC112 and see if you can find someone wanting to swap a V30 for a G12M if you want an Orange cab. But the other two cabs would get you there quicker I'm sure.

Re: OR15H with PPC108 cab?? (home use)
Another thing- I note the Palmer greenback cab is open back. Will that negate the benefit (in terms of lower volume playing) of the G12m over the V30? I guess what I mean is- will the open back cab sound louder at a given amp output than a closed back cab with the same speaker?Thinline_slim wrote:Yep. Or one of these would work too.

I would like an Orange cab with a G12M (although a pricier option)- is it san easy switch to make for someone with no technical experience of amp mods?

Re: OR15H with PPC108 cab?? (home use)
OPen back cabs would be a good thing if volume is a worry. They are less punchy, less "beamy", the sound spreads better and don't feel quite as loud a closed back cabinets, which can be quite directional.
I've never heard of the Palmer, but I would worry about the construction of the cab - what sort of wood has been used to make it?
Good quality plywood? or to be avoided chipboard?

Its MDF I'm afraid. I'd only use it for home use though, so it wouldn't have to withstand the rigours of the road.Les Paul Lover wrote:OPen back cabs would be a good thing if volume is a worry. Having said that if its easy enough to switch the V30 in a PPC for a greenback , that would be another option. I'd be worried about 1) this being too tricky 2) devaluing and voiding the warranty of the Orange cab...

Re: OR15H with PPC108 cab?? (home use)
It isn't tricky at all to swap speakers. A few screws to get the back off, 4 bolts holding the speaker to the baffle and 2 electrical clips connecting the input jack to the speaker. Really easy. Just make sure you only tighten the speaker bolts hand tight though. Over tightening can bend the frame and cause problems.
As for the Orange warranty, I would guess it probably voids it doing a speaker swap, but there's really not much to warranty aside from the speaker. It's a wood box with wrapping paper.

I notice the stock PPC cab is 16ohm impedance. Would the impedance change if I put in a greenback?

Re: OR15H with PPC108 cab?? (home use)
Impedance follows the actual speaker so to keep it a 16 ohm cab you'd need to replace the 16ohm V30 with a 16ohm G12M.
