And here it is!

Image

The Mesa Boogie Throttle Box. Very good high gain distortion. I prefer it with the internal boost switch off. Cuts the low end a bit and loses a little gain. But there's more than enough available! Sort of Rectifier in a Box. And it does cut through if set right! Still experimenting with it, but very happy. Way better than the MXR Badass '78 i had a while ago.

Doesn't work like that. And i use an Orange and a Fender running parallel. So there's more to my tone than just orange and mesa.

Been curious on these new Mesa pedals. Must admit I'm not into the metal rectifier sounds, but the Flux Drive and Grid Slammer look interesting. They look like they will take a beating.

Build quality is beyond expectations. Everything feels rock solid. And the feel of the knobs is something you seldom experience.
This throttle box does more than high gain, by the way. There's a toggle on the front that drastically lowers the gain on the front.
And the tone controls are very effective. Just give them all a try if you can.

Very nice looking pedal..
A work mate was singing the praises of their 'bottle rocket' pedal the other week... now out of production.

Mesa build quality is usually very good indeed. They did have a slight quality dip some years back (one particular amp range had a few issues) but generally they know how to build PCB stuff right. I'd expect them to be very neat inside. I know my little MB Subway combo is.

Yeah the V1 'Bottle Rocket' was pretty nice. And totally different from the bigger 'V twin' pedal BTW.

Yeah, we may be in the minority here, but I've heard and had some seriously good sounds from Boogies. Including lovely fat rich cleans which are a million miles from 'sterile'. I especially like the Mesas which also say 'Boogie' somewhere. Well the simpler ones anyway. But the other ones are pretty serious kit too.

As long as people don't expect them to sound best with everything set flat dimed - they just don't work that way. (Unless you really dig uncontrollable feedback maybe... :P)

Which are your own favourites anyway?

I don't mind Mesa at all, I think they're great amps. I don't care much for the high gain triple rectifiers all that much but they're other offerings are nice amps like the lonestar, 5:25, 5:50.

Andy.

Your right about the cleans. My favorites are the Lone star special and the Electra dyne. The LSS is switchable 30/15/5 watt Nd has really nice cleans and great lead and crunch tones when dialed right. That would be the knock of the lead channel it can sound muddy if not dialed the right way.

The Electra dyne is a simple one channel with 3 modes clean, Lo and Hi. The clean is amazing and the crunch is amazing. I sold this amp but would like to have another sometime. The 2 big problems are the volume is not exactly balanced between modes. It's hard to get the clean to keep up with the other 2 modes volume wise. Then when you turn the clean up, it makes the othe 2 modes too loud. Btw all the modes share the same controls. This problem could be worked around but the 2nd problem is why I got rid of the amp... It's the loudest amp you have ever heard!

It has 90watt and 45watt mode. Even at 45 watt you never get the amp past 930 or 10 and its screaming at those levels.

The TA30 that I picked up is also cool, switchable 40/30/15 watts and has 2 channels with 4 modes.
Channel 1 has a clean and a vox like circuit , channel 2 has a clean and a marshall plexi type and a boogie high gain. Oh wait that's 5 modes :D but its been a fun amp to play with

I'm with you on that, I don't care for the rectifier high gain either
