NGD (in a few) 1965 Fender Mustang
So, I've been working my butt off lately, so with some extra money, I decided to get myself a nice affordable vintage guitar. Bought this 1965 Fender Mustang (not reissue) from Guitar Center in Pittsburg for a STEAL! All original with original case. I got it for about 75% of actual value. I didn't realize it, but Guitar Center's vintage prices are really low. Guy on the phone said they intentionally try to undercut eBay prices. Good bit of info to have I suppose. Anyways here's a pic:
I'll upload way better pics later on when it arrives via UPS next week.
I've started a second band recently that's more 60s/70s garage / proto-punk stuff so this guitar through me Ampeg Gemini II should be just what the doctor ordered. Stoked!

Dang! It's aged beautifully and looks to be in good shape. That's the best color for Mustangs IMO.

Yeah, I think I like the daphne blue the best. They only came in olympic white, daphne blue, or dakota red in the early slab body ones. I was wanting either blue or white, but the white ones tend to sell for a tad more. Blue was pretty much my first choice though.
This is actually one of the only ones that had both the original trem bar and that weird bridge mute cover thing on it. Almost all of them are missing the mute, and most are missing the trem bar.

So how much was it? I don't think there a problem with saying those prices here. But regardless of what you paid for it it definitely looks like a socre. It is a beauty with a really nice aging in it. Congrats!

Thanks! Only $1220 after tax and shipping. Listed at $1099. Really good deal for the year/color/condition/etc. I have been looking for a couple weeks, and they have mostly been $1500 or more for this year and color from anywhere you can actually trust to buy from that I could find.

Cool - definitely better to buy from Pittsburgh than our local GC in Natick. Their "vintage" prices are obscene....

Ha! I totally know what you mean. They are pretty small. I'm only 5'10" and weigh about 175lbs (80kgs I guess) so it'll be normal looking on me.Butcher Quinn wrote:Man, I love the look of mustangs but being 6'3" and 110kgs, they look like ukuleles when I play em

Congrats!
Looks a brilliant guitar - and with that age, it's price will only ever appreciate!
I'm sure it'll feel pretty special owning a guitar that old - hope it plays well!!!

They (mustangs) actually seem to have started to fall in prices over the past couple of years. In the late 90's up to about 2006-2008 or so, they were crazy expensive in my experience. I guess the grunge days are finally over and the Cobain mystique is starting to fade a bit with these guitars, as I personally think that had some influence on the prices.
Guitar Center Nashville had a dozen of these 60's models a few years back and most were at or above the 2K mark. They hung on the upper wall for at least a couple of years. Most were white with the red pickguard....not sure if they were all pre-CBS or not. I noticed that about 2 years ago, they were ALL gone, so I don't know what they did with them, but they cleared them out.
I have always wanted one and if $1200 is going to be the new norm, I am going to pick one up for sure!

Stoked, guitar plays awesome! Needs a setup but other than that it's great. I don't think the case is original but oh well. They also forgot to give me the trem bar!
I'm 100% happy with it and it just feels great to play a guitar that probably has tons of awesome stories to go with it. Feels so much better than a new guitar.

The finish looks awesome. Just the right amount of wear.
