Changing effects while amp is on...

Post by Wendigo » Wed May 15, 2013 7:34 pm

Can disconnecting the effects in the fx lop damage the amp if it's on and not on standby? My student has been doing this with a Thunder 30 and I'm worried about his fx driver (12at7). I guess it wont harm the output stage in that the speaker load is still connected.

Shouldn't. It should be no different than changing channels. Pretty much just closing one circuit path to another.

I wondered about that too with my TH30. I always put it in standby when I was rearranging my pedals. I figured for the extra couple seconds it takes to go flip the switch it's worth the peace of mind.

I don't think there's anything to overly worry about. Maybe you could momentarily short the signal tip of the jack to ground while removing but I can't see that doing much...in fact I don't think i can see much at all right now... 8)

If it's making a pop noise and the speaker is barely rated for the 30 watts, maybe, but other than that "perfect storm" scenario, no, you should be a-okay.
