Which EL34's do you like in your Rocker 30?
Just got a Rocker 30 head. The tubes in this thing seem old and cheap. What tubes do you Rocker guys use in your R30? I have heard good things about the JJ KT77's. I am more concerned about a good warm crunch with lots of bottom end that anything clean. Cleans are secondary for me. What do y'all like?

I really dig E34Ls. I haven't tried anything else yet in my R30 but compared to regular JJEL34s, Svetlana (yes, real ones), EH, and Mullard RI in my DSL the E34L had a way beefier bottom end that was thick and tight. I'm running them in my R30 and it CRUSHES. I have to back the bass of to 10:30-11:00 with most humbucker guitars through anything but a single 12 cab.

I always loved the JJ KT77 in my Rocker 30. I thought they gave it an awesome full bodied rock sound.

Never tried any!
The stock EH 6CA7 valves in mine will eventually probably be replaced with the same type. Big, bold, articulate, lots of headroom. Exactly right for getting the very best out of the big bold sounding R.30 IMO.
I've seen them described as like a cross between an EL34 and a 6L6, which is probably fair. I see JJ also do a 6CA7 too now. Probably also worth trying.
Andy.

The Svetlana Winged -C- was an improvement on my R30. Much richer sound compared to the stock ones, dunno which brand they were, i guess Orange changed throughout the years of production.

Are you talking about the original Svetlana winged C or the "SED" new production winged C?Jabberwocky wrote:Svetlana winged C every time.

=C= Winged C brand = SED (Svetlana Electronic Devices). The other 'Svetlana' = Sovtek.JimmyOhio75 wrote:Are you talking about the original Svetlana winged C or the "SED" new production winged C?Jabberwocky wrote:Svetlana winged C every time.
Unfortunately SED appear to have just stopped production. There was a thread on that here recently!
They were very good though. If going for EL34s for the amp I'd have probably grabbed those.

I like JJ KT77's. I find I am getting a tighter sound at a higher volume that I got with the winged c el34's. Plus, the 34's crapped out with much fewer hours than I have put on the 77's so far.

How about 12AX7's? I heard that 12AX7's don't change the sound nearly as much as the power tubes do? Is this the case? If so I assume that just about any 12AX7's will do?giantkiller77 wrote:I like JJ KT77's. I find I am getting a tighter sound at a higher volume that I got with the winged c el34's. Re: Which EL34's do you like in your Rocker 30?
FWIW, I don't really like my JJ KT77's. I don't think they're tight. They break up too early for my liking. They don't have the soaring mids that my Groove Tubes E34L's had. I started messing with my preamp tubes just to compensate. As a result, I'm very happy with my sound, but I wouldn't buy another pair. FWIW, The KT's really do the chug chug wall of sound thing quite well if that's what you're after. I play an OR80, so of course maybe my experience doesn't apply to your situation. Just my two cents.

Re: Which EL34's do you like in your Rocker 30?
I'm not sure I understand what you're asking, as the OP was regarding power tubes. You can get different crunch textures by messing around with preamp tubes, however, and if most of your playing is below power amp clip, changing preamp tubes will have a more dramatic effect than changing power tubes.JimmyOhio75 wrote:How about 12AX7's? That's pretty much exactly what I'm after, confirming why I like the KT's so much, I guess. Thanksnlimbaugh wrote:FWIW, The KT's really do the chug chug wall of sound thing quite well if that's what you're after.
Re: Which EL34's do you like in your Rocker 30?
Yeah, JJE34Ls are what I was raving about in my earlier post. They sound fantastic in the Rocker 30. GT and Ruby E34Ls are just re-labeled JJ tubes anyway.JimmyOhio75 wrote:Has anyone tried the JJ E34L tubes?
