Re: Which EL34's do you like in your Rocker 30?
I just took out the old power tubes and put in some old Shuguang EL34-B's that I had lying around. These seemed to sound better but I can't seem to tame the high end raspiness when I crank it up and the gain is around 3 o'clock. Perhaps these chinese tubes have something to do with it? I still have the original stock preamp tubes in it. Maybe the fact that they are old is causing this raspiness? I am going to get some Tung Sol 12AX7's and see if that helps.

Not to go too off topic, but, I don't have much experience with power tubes. How do the JJE34L's compare the 'gold standard' nos Mullard el34? Sonic differences?

Hey Jimmy, try a JJ ECC83S in V1 and V2. They definitely have a smoother top end and are very inexpensive. A Tung Sol in V1 will increase the brightness and possibly the harshness you're perceiving on the crunch channel. Without knowing all the other variables in you rig I would try alternating a JJ and a Tung Sol in V1 and a JJ in V2 for sure.

Stymie, I put a JJ in V1 and I'm still getting some high end raspiness. How can I warm it up and smooth it out?

On the gain channel only? I would try the JJ in V1 first and if it doesn't help much, try another JJ in V2 at the same time. One half of V1 feeds into V2 for the drive channel. It has a pretty modern voicing which gives it that edge but I'm sure there's a way to mellow it out although pre-amp tubes may not yield the results you're after. What cab/speakers are you playing through? What volume level are you playing at? You could try a pseudo-beam blocker by applying a 2" square of duct tape to the speaker grill cloth directly in front of the dust caps to see if it cuts the objectionable frequency. Then you could shift your efforts to the speakers rather than tubes.

I have two main cabs, both are 2x12's. One has a WGS Reaper and Retro 50. The other cab has V30's. Both cabs sound equally harsh and bright, although the v30 cab seems to be worse.Stymie13 wrote:On the gain channel only? I just ordered a matched pair of JJ e34L's in blue glass and 3 JJ 12ax7's. They should be here next week. Maybe this will do the trick.
