Cab Question

Post by Doctor Volume » Fri Apr 12, 2013 3:08 am

so i run a TH100 into a Marshall mg412 cab. a few years ago i replaced the top two speakers with G12T-75's. it sounds great at mid volume, but when i crank it, it sounds like crap. so what do i do. replace the other two speakers? replace all four speakers? or just get a new cab? the mg cab is 8 ohms by the way. im not sure if that has anything to do with it.

my style changes from day to day. from nick lucas to bloodbath and everything in between.

any help on this matter would be much appreciated.
Can I raise a practical question at this point? Are we gonna do "Stonehenge" tomorrow?

Well what are your other 2 speakers? For one I would definitely not buy 4 brand new speakers. If you were going to do that you should just sell your cab and order a new cab from Avatar and have him put in whatever kind of speakers you want.

As to why it does not sound good loud, I really wouldn't know. I know that particular speaker is pretty scooped in the mids, depending on what else you have in there maybe its not mixing well and getting muddy and muffled as the volume goes up

Yeah, what are the two other speakers?

Thing about the G12T-75s is that they are indeed very mid scooped. Though a few people do like the combination to my ears they are about the worst drivers with Orange amps I've come across. Orange amps put out lots of lovely rich low mids. G12T-75s though just can't, so you lose the guts of your sound. A 300W Marshall cab will convert my OR120 from an insanely powerful sounding amp to something like a very ill 50W version of itself.

Also the MG cabs aren't exactly Marshalls top line - an Avatar is worth thinking about - it would be a genuine step up.

As long as the cab is wired correctly and actually is 8 ohms, running it from the amp's 8 ohms output will allow full amp power and tone.

I'd look into a new cab. There's a reason these MG cabs are so cheap. :(

If you're on a budget, try to find a used Marshall 1960 lead cab (the true plywood ones).
Orange cabs are really nice but you pay for quality.

+1

nothing good to say about the MG cabs: crappy 35 watts no name speakers (super muddy)
and the cab itself is made of presswood which isn't a great choice. Plus, the small size affects the bass response at high volume. don't put $$$ in it, just a waste of time and money!

look for a cab in birch ply with standard size ;)

Yes you can find the marshall 1960 cab for pretty good prices used. I will also say that I have a avatar 2x12 and a orange 2x12 a personally I like the avatar just as well. The orange is definitely a killer Cab and may overall be slightly better but its not like you can tell because the avatar is great and their prices are fantastic, as well you have the option to choose your speakers. Vintage 30, greenback, ect ect. Then if you pay a little more you can upgrade the speakers to g12-65s or creambacks or some of the gig her priced ones.

Sell the Marshall cab. There is probably a 16 year-old who will look at the Marshall logo and pay too much for it. You can't go wrong with an Avatar cab. You get the cab and speakers for about the price of the speakers.

MG412 was the first cab I ever owned. It didn't stay for very long. If your gigging it's not a good choice.

Money goes a long way on Craigslist these days as far as buying 4x12 cabs. They seem to be falling out of fashion as more people seem to be moving to 2x12's. I have a friend in PA who couldn't sell his Mesa w/ English V30's for $400. I told him to keep it.

That is true there is a mesa boogie 4x12 in my area in great shape for $350... I'm so tempted but I just have no use for it
