OR15 Tone
I am looking for a new amp and the or15 is really appealing to me. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this amp and a jcm 800. I have been searching for one to try but can't seem to find one and I hear that the or15 does have quite a bit of gain on tap. I know that orange amps have their own tone and that one is a 15 watt compared to a 100 or 50 watt. However I would like to know if I can get in the ballpark of a heavier gain jcm 800 tone. I am also considering the jim root sig so comparing that would also help.
Re: OR15 Tone
Well, these days I play an OR15 and played a 100w JCM800, 1959 model in the 90s, really like them both! They're similar in a lot of ways, especially since my JCM800 was the non master volume Plexi model,(more vintage tone than the master volume JCM800 IMHO), but the Marshall has a harder tone and the OR15 sounds a bit darker to me. The biggest difference would be EL34s vs EL84s, let alone the big difference in volume, EL84s are softer or flabbier in the bottom end. Haven't noticed that in my OR15 though, much more noticable when I converted my old JMP 1986 to EL84s! All in all, I guess you could say they're kind of similar, in a british tone kind of way!
Re: OR15 Tone
And I don't play with much gain, prefer to get the power tubes saturated, I keep the gain knob on my OR15 on 10 o'clock at most! There's much mora available, but then you lose dynamics and touch sensitivity!

Re: OR15 Tone
there's a few things in play here. for one, you're comparing an orange to a marshall (a later marshall at that). from that alone you should expect a darker, thicker tone overall. the OR15 has quite a bit of gain, as much if not more than the 800. but you're also talking about a 50/100W amp vs a 15W amp. there's pros and cons for each of this: the OR15 will get dirtier quicker and not be unusable in bedroom settings, but it will also have a lot less bottom end than the JCM.
i'm taking you're wanting to play metal with it? the OR15 is essentially the same as the Jim Root terror, just a couple of values switched and put in a shiny enclosure.

Re: OR15 Tone
I have played an Jcm800 and owned a or15 for about 6 months, and without going to a long detailed comparison the or can get in the same ballpark but is not going to be as ice pick if that's a good word, basically will be a little warmer and thicker. But yes I had a couple people comment when I had it and gigged it that it sounded like an old marshall. It has some real nice dirty clean tones and has a lot of gain.
