I play a baritone and love the low end (maybe I should play bass, but that's another story)
would the celestion G12H30 55Hz in a PPC412 be too bottom end BOOMY?
I play heavy doom type music.
would these 55hz speakers handle the low end better then the stock V30's?

Even the standard 75Hz Anniversary G12H-30s will have a fuller bottom end than the V.30. The 55Hz version even more so. You'd lose the slightly honky upper mids peak of the V.30
What amp are you using - how powerful? How much gain? They are great speakers (though the Heritage version is expensive), but maybe not the very best for masses of gain. I'm assuming nothing though. You could always fit two of each, the Heritages on the bottom. Or just try two 'H' s and two V.30s at first.
Others worth thinking about? Well the Classic Lead 80 is kind of like a higher powered H-30. And the Mesa Celestion MC90 is a killer driver, similar again tonally but probably more efficient (=louder).

I'd run it with an OD80 (well OD120 with two tubes pulled)
master tapped out, and gain at 3:00. I want Heavy tones, but not metal.
they're normally $$ speakers, but I have a lead on a quad for 550$, which seems pretty irresistible. Maybe I should save up and go full Monty with a quad of EVM12L

Scary thought, but if you can grab some probably a great one too. From a safe enough distance anyway.Forrrest wrote:I'd run it with an OR80

so the EVM12L would be a MUCH better idea?
I've read they need a sturdy cab due to their weight (20lbs each). I assume the PPC412 is sturdy enough...

Have you thought of this?

I haven't tried them personally, but I have the 10'' Alnico on one of my amps and it's a great speaker, really fat 10''. Maybe just changing 2 of the V30s could do.

The PPC412 is about as sturdy as they come. That would be a very weighty combination. (Much) better? That depends...Forrrest wrote:so the EVM12L would be a MUCH better idea?

The EV is very efficient and has a lot of bottom end. Very tough too - almost impossible to get them to break up they are relentlessly clean speakers with a very flat response. Which can be fine if you want the real character of the amp to shine through. May be too efficient though - might not always let you crank the amp enough to get to the point where it really sounds good. (Old ORs just don't sound great until they are running LOUD! Possibly why you are running yours as an OR80???) I've never had a chance to try my OR through EVs. I'd like to but for me that would be an unusably loud combination for guitar, probably fantastic for bass. For you though???
Another alternative along similar lines would be the old Celestion Sidewinder. 150W, again very efficient, great sounding too in a similar but more Celestion styled vein. Hard to find but I'd love to have one or two myself. (Again would work really well for bass too IMO.)
And again the MC90. Very full and solid sounding driver, also right up there in efficiency. Again probably more real character than the EV - much more G12H sounding.
Not a thing wrong with the Celestion G12H-30 of course, but don't just buy it because you've spotted the very expensive Heritage variant at a slightly less crazy than usual price. Get it because you like the tones. They are great speakers - probably my favourite all rounders for rock and they suit Oranges brilliantly IMO. Wouldn't fully trust a quad with an OR120 set full on bassy, but should be fine in OR80 mode.
Am I helping any here or just confusing things?

Re: celestion G12H30 55Hz in PPC412
Andy brings up a couple of good HP alternatives to the G12H30. just wanted to throw one into the mix: Check out WGS (wgs4.com). They make USA-made clones of Celestions for about half the price, one of the speakers is a 50 watt version of the G12H (they have one with a bass cone as well, i believe), for about $80. great speakers, too.
i think if you have a 412 to mix and match some stuff, it might not be a bad idea to mix the V30s and G12H30s. those two speakers compliment each other really, really well.

I was also thinking the EVs might be a bit too clean for the style of music you're wanting them for.
