Which Orange amp head would you buy, if..........
You played southern rock and soul and you were able to buy any current available Orange?
Re: Which Orange amp head would you buy, if..........
I'd test the waters on the new OR100, if not then The Rockerverb.Lawsam wrote:You played southern rock and soul and you were able to buy any current available Orange?

Rockerverb 50!
Should be versatile enough to cover all the genres that you listed.

AD30TC either combo or head. You'll nail all of that sound with this...

I'm thinking the OR100 should be a winner for Southern Rock, and it should have a fair amount of clean volume for Soul. I'd expect an OR120 to be the best choice for something like Lynyrd Skynyrd because it is so dynamic, but you're not going to find a new one!

So, I'm sitting here with a TH30 head and the 2x12 closed back cab. However, I'm prepared to move up if I need to. bclaire says AD30TC and alexauxier says Rockerverb 50 mkII I assume. Again, I'm a weekend rhythm guitar player playing southern rock and soul. Will I really be that much more impressed with either of these two than I am with my TH30?alexauxier wrote:Rockerverb 50 IMO

Always the best approach.misterfolkertsma wrote:Try and decide
I play a lot of classic rock/blues and some funk/soul live and I think either the AD30htc, RV50 or OR50 (probably the OR100 also) would easily cover it.
I personally get along really well with an OR50 or AD30htc for the stuff I do. The RV50 is going to have a little more modern tone (tighter bass) but not so much as the TH30 from what I've tried at the store.
The TH30 has a great clean channel but I wouldn't personally get it because the drive just doesn't have a vintage feel. Just an opinion.

I have the th30. For all these reasons I too am searching. Although classic rock is my thing I am in the same situation. I have to try the or100!
Re: Which Orange amp head would you buy, if..........
I've had the AD30TC and now the RV50MKII. Both will easily do classic rock. The RV has more available gain, much cleaner clean channel, FX loop and reverb. Both fantastic OD. I only sold the AD because I needed something that could get more gain but easily backed off into classic rock territory with the turn of the guitars vol knob.

RV 50/100 if only for the clean channel which you'll need some high volume cleans to cover some of your genre.....
OR100 may be worth a look, but I have never played or heard one in person, but I'm betting the full eq clean channels on the RV will be hard to beat

I'm a huge fan of the RV50; I've owned mine since '07 (bought new). It's got a great master volume and gain knob and can be dialed in to do any of the styles you mentioned. I've tried the RV50 mkII, Rocker 30, TH30 and just the other day bought an AD30HTC. The RV50 sounds better than all of those IMO.
I was extrememley dissapointed in the AD30HTC, maybe it was the cheap "PM" branded 12ax7's and EL84's, or maybe I just don't like EL84's...but the gain was so fizzy and harsh sounding. Channel one is ok dialed in to edge of breakup but overall I live on the rock side of things and there's no way the AD30 could replace my RV50. I wish I could hear some Mullard EL84's and Tung-Sol 12ax7's in the AD30 but I'm not gonna throw money at it - it's going back.
From memory, I prefer the TH30 and Rocker 30 more so than the AD30HTC. Being Class A, Cathode biased, it just seems the AD30 is running way too hot. I like biasing the RV50 myself, I can dial in as much headroom as I need and can keep things from being too grating.
On a side note, I've also owned a Bogner Shiva, Budda SD30 and briefly had a Fargen Olde 800 Mkii. The RV50 killed them all.
