Unmolested OR120?

Post by dreamdistortion » Tue Feb 26, 2013 4:43 am

Attention tech guys: Can any of you tell me if this amp has had any mods or replacement parts? Thanks!

-None of the knobs are original.

-The original power cable has been replaced (poorly) with an IEC plug.

-The filter caps have been replaced with Sprague atoms. These are good caps. But it looks like a sloppy job.

-The screen grid resistors on 2 of the power tubes have been replaced with sand boxes that are too large for the application. Sloppy. There's a 3rd sandbox in there for something. That's a hack job they way they're thrown in there. They're too big to trust just hanging around like they are. I'd be worried about them shorting against something and/or causing arching.

-There's been some sort of bugging about on the board with one of those signal caps. It's lifted up off the board and has a loose wire connected to it. Hack job mod, whatever it is.

-A few other components on the board (small resistors and maybe a diode) look to have been replaced.

Unmolested? Far from it. There's a lot of hack work in that amp. This is an example of why people who don't know what they're doing should not be inside amps. I even see what may be tape holding some connections together under the power switch. This amp needs to be gone over by a good tech and brought back to proper order. It may function ok, but I wouldn't trust any of the work in there, seeing how it was done.

I've de-hacked a number of old Oranges. People get lazy with these, but it can be brought back to spec with proper components and checked against the schematic to make sure everything is in proper order. The good news is, despite the missing bell cover, the transformers appear to be original. It's a shame someone hacked up the chassis to fit that plug. It could have been done a lot neater. If it were my amp, i'd fix that as well. Fit something that would cover it up. And that impedance plug is shot. Either find a replacement or bite the bullet and fit an actual switch.

It's rough in there, but it can be saved.

By the way, someone has had that amp in and out of the chassis a lot. See how the paint is worn off the bottom and the plexi panel is all cracked in the corners? I have a plexi amp as well (see sig pic), the plexi panel is a tight fit in the head sleeve and can easily get caught up. Someone liked tinkering with that thing, or had a lot of problems with it.

Someone needs to save that thing.

Wow. Amazing reply. Thanks a million. Saved it should be, but unfortunately I'm not the one to do it -- unless I can get them to drop at least $500 off the price tag.

Yeah, it definitely needs saving! But seriously, the price is way too high for that amp like it is.

The power switch is not original either. It may be a 3 way switch for a stand-by?
