Been offered a 1977 Greco Les Paul Custom

Hi guys,

I currently own a Tokai Talbo Blazing Fire from the 80s that I really love but can't find a practical use for. I have been offered as a trade a mint condition Greco Les Paul Custom from 1977.

I have heard that these are good guitars however I don't know the history of the maker and which years would be best. Considering the rarity of the Blazing Fire, I want to make sure that I am getting a good thing.

A huge photo album of the guitar can be found here:

If any masters of Japanese guitar lore can look over this and give their opinion, I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers! :)

Nice guitar, looks like it's a set neck?

Greco and Burny are among the best 'lawsuit' les pauls, they command good money and sell well, I suggest you would have little problem recouping your money from one. The latest Blazing Fire sold on ebay for about 70% of the going rate for a good greco LP.

Does that help?
Here we go; three, four...

Should be good. Unless it is a lemon with issues. Which would be less good.

Yeah, these were quality guitars, but can you play it before you trade?

Is the fret work shoody like that from the factory, or is that a bad refret? I see some frets that aren't pressed in well and the slots are too large. I wouldn't rule out the need for some fret work to get it playing and intimating nicely.

Good point Nick. Shoody intimating isn't funny... :o

I would be careful and test it before.
The best LPs replicas are Greco Super real that started in 1979.
Those Greco before were with pancake bodies and hollow like this one
http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/other-l ... ollow.html
I don't know if they are bad or good but they are not the one that goes for top dollars and are not exact replicas of les paul.
A good place for old japanese guitars is the tokai forum, I am sure that somebody with better knowledge than me will give you more informations.
I own three relatively new tokai (2007...) and I am very happy with it.

Hmm..I don't like the look of the guy's hand/wrist. I'd be suspicious. He has moles, and may be some sort of leprechaun. They are known to be tricksters, and sometimes steal children from their beds.

I would tend to agree. Mitch probably isn't even his real name. I suspect that he has already extracted all of the mojo from the guitar and replaced it with marmalade.

I agree about the moles.

I decided not to go with it as it was chambered which is not what I want out of a Les Paul.

It also sounds like it was one of the lower end guitars that Greco made in the mid to late 70s. The EG1000s were the good ones.
