Hello from a newbie, and AD15 + cab help needed

Post by BillKat » Thu Nov 29, 2012 9:48 pm

Hi all,
Just got joined up here, so hello :) . I've recently got myself an AD15 and love it. Although it blew a valve the other night (Hendrix' birthday - praps it knew..?).

Thing is, I want to hook up a 2x12 cab but I've really no idea what to look for (not bought yet). Keep finding conflicting information all over the place. And I really don't want to damage the amp.

It has two outputs, but neither is marked.
Back panel says 8/16, and I've read that this is supposed to indicate the order of outputs as you look at the unit, but also seen one marked 16/8...

I'm lost.... how can I tell which output is what. What impedance cab should I look for and how to hook it up. Any help would be really appreciated.

Just about to get my little lad a Micro Terror for xmas, he's got the Orange bug too

cheers,
Bill

Bill,

There are 2 ways to figure this out if you don't trust the markings on the chassis:

1) Pop the chassis out and have a look at the wires that feed the output jacks. They will be labelled where they feed into the PCB from the output transformer. According to the schematic, TX12 is the 16 ohm and TX13 is the 8 ohm. These should be marked pretty clearly. You will have to look at the PCB traces carefully to make sure you know which wire goes where. TX14 should be ground.

2) If that doesn't help out and the wires are spade connectors (read: easily removable), I can tell you another method. But this requires a multimeter that measures resistance.

Check the markings on the PCB by tracing the wires and see if that helps narrow things down.

Post a photo of the sockets up, and we should be able to work it out.

Thanks all. Nick I'll have a look tomorrow evening. I've got a multimeter too.
Not sure what the speaker resistance is, it's not marked on it - it's the 10 incher. I'll get a pic as well.
Externally there's no markings on either socket.
Cheers guys,
Bill

I've looked on my recently aquired AD15/12 - it just says 16ohm/8ohm and has 2 holes to plug in a speaker cab.

My guess is that you can plug in 2 16ohm cab or 2 8ohm cabs at the same time?
Though Nick seems to be better informed I've just read.

I actually think it has to see 16 ohms and can take 1 16 ohm or 2 8 ohm cabs

That's strange. Mine clearly says the output sockets are "left to right from rear" 16 ohms, 8 ohms. How about posting a pic of your panel?

I'm thinking it can take either one 16 ohm or one 8 ohm cab. That's just an educated guess though since they never published an owners manual for the AD15....

I've never been inside an AD15. But what I took from the original post is that he doesn't trust the markings on the chassis for whatever reason, so I was offering an alternative.

If it's clearly marked, as Sooner mentioned above, that would put it to rest. But I assumed the thread wouldn't have been started if that was the case.

In any event, it should have one 16 ohm out and one 8 ohm out.

16 ohm = 1 x 16 ohm cab
8 ohm = 1 x 8 ohm cab OR 2 x 16 ohm cab.

You can't run 2 x 8 ohm cabs with that amp.

That's it. According to the data plate it's '8/16', but there's no markings on/near the outputs themselves to tell which is which (unless I did miss something - will have a peruse and do pics this eve).

Plus being just plain ignorant I don't know what combinations might be possible, once the outputs are sussed

cheers,
Bill

I am highly embarrassed and apologise profusely people... there is a note about the order on the data plate. Optician said I need glasses, she is right. I'm so sorry.

Thanks for the description there Nick re what to run off each one. Last question, would I be OK to run the internal speaker (off the 16) plus an 8 ohm cab, at the same time. Have read somewhere that only one output can be used, but then I've read lots of conflicting AD15 things elsewhere..

cheers

No worries. Glad the mystery is solved.

No, you can't use both jacks at the same time. You can make any combination of speakers that you can physically wire up to a given jack, as long as the impedance matches. But you can not safely use both at the same time.
