+1
I've often pondered this exact topic.
Internet forums and purchases of online gear have made my experimentation possible by a percentage of prob ably 90%. They've also costed me a lot of money in the process. So, I have actually cut WAY back on the time I spend in internet gear forums.

They asked for a dsl 15 with loop and 4 channels like the bigger ones and the 40 watter. They got a 15 with 2 channels most people don't use and missed out the crunch and normal lead channel and went for clean and ultra lead. No fx loop killed this amp for many user straight out the door.

I like my dsl 15 but hey I've had 15 amps in 3 years

One guy who listens is Steve the designer of the vintage modern. He's on the vm forum all the time responding to questions and queries. Maybe the rest of the guys should take note cos he'll be off one day with his reputation.

Orange listen for sure.
Jackson charvel forum has so many complaints so they never listen its funny.
Santiago is on the marshall forum a lot. I disagree with this statement.

So how comes when something new is released its missing everything the forum members are asking for?
Like I said they asked for a 20 ish watt dsl amp very similar to the dsl 401.

The got a dsl 15. Correct.
No fx loop. Wrong
Clean/crunch channel. Wrong.
Lead channel (most agree ultra lead is oftt) . Wrong.
They said either el84 or one el34 power section. Wrong (it has 6l6)

I love my amp but I will be adding a loop.

I think not listening. If listening then not responding to the public.
Tone is everything

I still find it a bit odd... groups of guys talking to one another over the Internet. But I'm glad they do.
I've certainly learnt a lot on here.

We should run a challenge to find the most bazaar forum on the Internet. Maybe this is it

Forums are for the most part a time sync. No doubt much good has come from them, but the signal to noise ratio is usually abismal and trolling most often takes over good threads from staying as good threads. Most of us will be guilty of this if hanging around for any point in time.

It turns out I get more out of it from being a lurker. Usually.

The effects of forums on gear

Post by DiabloS » Fri Nov 16, 2012 3:39 pm

One of my strange gear forum obsessions is that I like to read threads on gear that I already own. It helps keep gas away when you read threads of how other ppl are as happy with the gear you have as you are. Especially when they may have owned tons of other amps/guitars/pedals you may have thought of trying at some point, but they end up being happier with what you already have. It's a cheaper way of browsing forums anyways! :D I've probably read just about every thread there is online on the DT and TV50 amd I keep checking for new ones every few months on different forums..haha.

There is no way you didn't know that you needed an Orange personal computer  .

Good point. I'd never really thought of it that way, but I guess I do that too. And right enough I don't usually get too much GAS from forums. Has happened (eg my Genz Benz Streamliner bass head - thanks a bunch to the obsessives @ TalkBass!) but happily not too often.
