AD30TC and which pedal for solo-boost?
Moderator: bclaire
i tried the AD30TC and the overdrive on channel 2 is not enough for solos for my taste, sometimes i feel like needing more more more overdrive, for some screeming, feedbacking solos.
I also read the topic on this site "guitars", theres a discussion about which pedals work for the orange.
QUESTION: which pedal would provide me with the right amount of gain for solo-boost without making my sound "bad"? would a Tubescreamer be allright? anyone tried it? what are you using that gives you more overdrive (no heavy metal distorsion)?

i have a single channel ad30 and have gotten some great results with the visual sounds jekyll and hyde. it has two modes - an overdrive and a distortion. the overdrive gives a great tube screamer type crunch while the distortion works for my lead stuff. it covers a lot of bases and turns my single channel beauty into a three channel beast. i have my amp set with gain and master both just over half way and use the pedal to crank out the crunchy / dirty stuff. i'm loving it anyway.

A few people here at Orange use 'Super Hard On' pedals made by Zvex. They're basically a clean gain boost that gives you a lot more gain without changing the amplifiers tone. The down side is a fair bit of background noise, but it doesn't bother us!

I got a rat with a mod from Robert Keeley (www.robertkeeley.com) He is an Electrical Engineer who has built stuff for Frampton and Steve Vai among various studio players he makes an awesome Ross Compressor clone too.
The modded Rat has a 3 way switch with the middle being super volume boost. I think it is actually louder than the ZVEX. It is freaking loud and gives a nice edge on my solos really brings out the high and low end. For $105, I don't think you can beat it.
I wanna dip my balls in it!!!!

I know they're not made anymore but they do pop up on ebay- I have always really liked the older Marshall Drivemaster pedal- they have excellent controls, offer an excellent distorted sound from mild Bluesbreakery-dirt to more over-the-top distortion. I have one still mounted in my effects rack just for a certain sound that I can't get with the twin channel amps alone.
And a huge benefit to those pedals- batteries last forever or at least a very long time. I started writing the date that I changed the battery right on the battery with a Sharpie when I changed them because I wanted to see how long they were lasting. One in particular was over a year before I changed it again!!! Top that! Billy

I've got an AD30R and I use two pedals. First, I use a Rocktron Austin Gold Overdrive. This pedal is great because it just gives a nice boost to your original tone without changing it too much. Ideal for an Orange as it relies on you having a good tone in the first place. Next, I use a Rocktron BlackJack. This is a two mode pedal - boost and distortion. For lead work, I tend to use the distortion mode but the boost mode is also good for "cleaner" lead work. On the amp I tend to set the gain at 11 o'clock and the master at 1 o'clock. This gives a nice crunchy rhythm sound and allows the pedals to really lift the volume when needed. I'm using a stock Gibson SG junior. Simplicity rules - single channel amp, single pickup guitar !
Hi,
I use a Boss compression pedal with my AD30HTC and before that I used Marshalls Ed the Compressor. Both work extremely well!

I tried a range of pedals before I realised that the turning the gain up on the amp (AD15/10) is better than anything I'm going to get through a box of transistors.
Currently I use a Boss SD-1 for solo boost only, with the gain set to 0 and level set to full, tone just above halfway. That just slams the amp a bit, but I have it on a true bypass loop as it sucks bass. It only cost £31 new as well.
I bought a Carl Martin Crunch Drive for a dirt channel but actually it sounds a little too compressed for me, even though it's the best overdrive I've tried yet.
Stompboxes are cheap, swappable and easy to obsess over, and if I'm honest I can get a much better sound by walking over to the amp and turning up the gain. If I want clean and dirty in the same song (and how often do you really want that?) I use picking dynamics and, less often, guitar volume.
My pickups are medium hot and my strings are 11-50 so if I play hard I overdrive pretty much whatever the gain setting. A boost pedal is useful, but an overdrive is probably unnecessary with a good amp like this. However, that hasn't stopped me buying an MXR 10 band graphic to far about with.
For overdriven sounds I go for Who "Live at Leeds" or thereabouts.

I've just recently purchased an AD30TC and absolutely love it. I was anxious to hook up my tubescreamer to it to see what kinda sound I could get. It sounded great on my clean channel, however, when I cranked up the gain on the other channel and used the tubescreamer, it just seemed to muffle the sound. As of now, I retired my tubescreamer.

I use a Tubescreamer, which sounds awesome in both channels (but I did find I had to play around with the settings for a while) and a modded fuzzface (see analogueman - they also do their own version which is ready modded, called a Sunface) - for soloing, this baby is unbeatable (if you dont mind a bit of feedback)!
