LIGHT neodymiums for my Orange 212PPC? Heavy downtuned rock

Post by everdrone » Sun Oct 21, 2012 1:34 am

I play downtuned heavy classic rock or heavy metal. My music is in my signature. I have a thunderverb 50 and orange 212PPC. My cabinet is too heavy for me and I want to minimize the possibility of future injury. Which lightweight neodymiums should I get?

I see these weigh only 3.7 pounds, so I am shaving off 15 pounds of weight!

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor ... 3000000612" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

what ohms should I get, 8ohm or 16ohm speakers?

Would these be a good match for this cabinet? It currently has v30s in. maybe not enough bass response? I understand Eminence makes good ones with 5 year warranties, which one is best? I really want them to be about 4 pounds for each 12" speaker.

Wel that is your only choice from Celestion. Don't know how they'd work for your detuned stuff though. Guessing probably not that well - more bottom end needed? Also a couple of dB less efficient than the V.30, so not quite as loud.

Never played any Eminence Neo guitar drivers, only their Kappalite bass ones (which are A1). Sorry that's not much help, but there isn't that much discussion of Neo drivers here. I know that irish_admiral uses Vintage Centuries with his AD30, but again I'm not sure exactly how much detuned stuff he does... :|

Sort of OT but...Nice rig! How do you find the Rat pedal works with your Thunderverb? I thought it sounded hideous when I tried it with mine. I got an MXR 10 band eq to push it and it works much better for me.

I tried the Jensen, Eminence and Celestion Neos and liked Celestion the best. Sound pretty much like a V30 without the uppermid peak. The Eminence sounded really harsh. The Jensens sounded exactly like my old EV12L, just not that efficient.
I also tried the Celestion + Jensen in a 212 and liked it a lot - best of both worlds. If you want to go Neo I'd suggest that setup. You would need two 8 ohm drivers to make a total load of 16 ohm.
That said I moved away from Neodynum for guitar and play V30 or Red Fang Alnico Speakers with my Orange again. They just have more depth to my ear.

thanks a_hun, I sent irish_admiral a private message in hopes that he can also help me out :-) , celestion also has the louder expensive one but it weighs another pound: http://www.zzounds.com/item--CELCNEO12" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; --> maybe they have an 8ohm (thanks bensen) not sure if it is right for me, but it does say satisfying bass; looks like they do not make it anymore and I wonder if its frequency chart is like the vintage http://celestion.com/product/14/g12_century_vintage/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

I like the rat pedal some because it sounds more sludgy/trashy/thrashy as an effect, but it takes away some of the low end yet has a static sounding top end; I am gonna ask Robert Keeley to mod it.

Bensen, thanks much for your insights there, I will look into Jensen and the mixing of two different speakers.

Thanks all, any other additional comments are welcome, cheers :)

LIGHT neodymiums for my Orange 212PPC? Heavy downtuned rock

I like the Eminence Lil Texas a lot. I've been using it for about 3 or 4 years now and have gone through many speaker changes but never got rid of that one. I personally don't find it harsh at all, it's actually a darker voiced speaker, though not quite as dark as its bigger brother the Texas Heat. I also play downtuned and have used that speaker with both the TV50 and DT with good results. It's way different than a V30 though.

cool, thanks man! I see they are only 4 pounds, I will look into these :)

lol! that strap looks killer, it is rugged too!

I found similar eminence speakers of swamp thang and tonker, compared to v30 here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWK0sa7t ... re=related" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

thinking the lil texas is right for me! I like the darker tone and it seems to have more low end based on the youtube clip of similar eminence, 101db efficiency. I will prolly give eminence a call to see what they think of me putting them in my orange 212PPC cab.

Lil' Texas 8ohm - Call for pricing and availability - The Eminence Lil' Texas 12" Guitar Speaker is a lightweight 12" speaker with a little Texas edge. Lil' Texas delivers a very balanced tone with crisp mids and top end bite tight bottom end and very American tonality. Great for classic rock blues and country. Neodymin version of the Texas Heat, brighter with more attack. 125W, 8 ohm impedance

Downtuned Sludge guitarists complaining that something is too heavy? What is this forum coming too? :lol:

I think you'll be horribly dissapointed with the sound of the new speakers, but it's your call. If you look back through the posts it's been written several times that they sound weak.

Yeah, I find a lot of the Eminence speakers share a certain quality about their tone that some may or may not like, I love it personally and consider it a big part of my sound. Most that I've tried sound fat, crisp, articulate, warm and have very little fizz compared to other speakers. I was trying to remember if I had recordings here of the lil Texas speaker with my Oranges, but I don't. I do have a youtube video of our band playing with that particular speaker mic'd though which is what you'd be hearing. I keep that cabinet at the jam spot so I can't just plug in at home and do a quick recording, so this is all I have to offer!

Hey all

Yes, I use the Celestion Century Vintages... they're really good speakers, but i'm not sure they'd suit downtuned stuff: they're articulate and nicely defined, a bit sharper than ceramic magnet speakers, but still pleasantly rich sounding. They're not far off a G12H Heritage sound I have... maybe somewhere between V30s and Alnico Blues.

Celestion used to make a speaker called the Celestion Century that might have been more up your street (higher db rating and less rock voiced), but I think they might be discontinued now.

That being said, I still think you're best off with a traditional speaker, and getting removable castors on your cab if you're worried about your back.

Hey, dudes...

When I bought my RV50 MKI, I also bought a Hiwatt 2X12 cab with G12T-100 (the "Hot 100") in it. These speakers have a lot of low end, and I really love the match.

I tried a 2x12 cab with V30s at the store. For my taste, I prefered the Hiwatt cab. The V30s got too much high end, IMHO.

So, this is my tip for you. If you can, try these speakers. Even when I read about them on the net since as I got them, there were something like "downtuners will love these speakers" and stuff like that.

BTW, I play 70's classic rock mostly, in standard tunning.

Not to be a dink, but maybe you should try working out a bit? I don't find the 2x12 that heavy....

I don't think you're gonna find a neo you're happy with.
