Last night at practice I brought my oversized 60s Traynor 2x12 loaded with WGS ET65 speakers to try out with my R30. I usually use this cab at home with a TT for practicing. I set it up in a vertical fashion. This cab is pretty large, almost as big as a 4x12. Anyways, immediately the tone just wasn't what I'm used to, sounded quiet and thin and was getting lost in the band mix compared to what I usually hear. The mids just weren't happening for me. After two songs I switched back to my 70s 4x12 slant Marshall cab with two g12m 55hz Blackbacks and two g12m 75hz Creambacks and it was immediate rock bliss. Fat, creamy, biting tone that cut right through the mix. Sounded HUGE after using the 2x12. I now realize why these cabs cost so much.
That is now the second 2x12 cab I haven't liked at all in the band mix. The other one was the PPC212 which sounded small, bright, and directional compared to the Marshall, about the same as the Traynor in retrospect.
Anyways, just not getting down with 2x12 cabs personally. I'm almost thinking maybe they need to be open back to sound right to my ears. Maybe part of it might be the 35 years or so my g12m have had to break in?!
My 70s Marshall cab is amazing!

When I last plugged in my Orange 4x12 with G12h's which doesn't happen enough unfortunately I had a similar reaction.
It just sounded so much fatter and warmer than what I've gotten used to using now...
I think open back probably would help for a 2x12

I love 4x12 cabs!
Re: My 70s Marshall cab is amazing!
I'm jealous. Biggest loss I've had with gear was the departure of my 1960's (I was told) Marshall 4x12 with greenbacks. I really didn't turn past noon back then... probably would've started blowing those precious speakers anyway.

Set that 2X12 on top of your 4X12!
I have a Framus Dragon series 4X12 w Celestion V30s, which I have to say is a really nice cabinet. Also have a no-name 2X12 with metal grille that had 2 V 30s, one blew so I put in a......WGS ET 65 (the two speakers sound great together btw). The 2X12 can be open or closed back, as I fabricated a nice piece of 3/4 birch plywood to firmly close up the back when I want to. Anyway, the Framus sounds pretty damn good on its own with my Rocker 30, but being a "bottom" straight cabinet, I usually have to stand out a ways from the amp to really hear it. I usually leave the 2X12 at home to practice w as well, but sometimes in my band situation I need a little more "bite" to cut thru the mix, so I throw the 2X12 on top (nice thing about having all those speaker inputs on the back of the Rocker). Seems like just having that one ET-65 up high really makes a difference in clarity for me I guess you'd call it a 3/4 stack

Unfortunately I made my 2x12 8ohm so I can't pair it with my 4x12. Figured I could use it with about any amp at that resistance.
Re: My 70s Marshall cab is amazing!
That's exactly how I feel about my 77 Hiwatt cab. The Fane Purples are just the best sounding speaker I've heard. I'm currently putting together (literally) a 22w head and 1x12 for smaller gigs but am worried that the loss of fullness that only comes with a quad will end up bugging me too much.

Regardless of how good a a 1x12 might sound mic'd, it seems to me like how you perceive your own sound affects your playing.

I have an old late 70's Marshall 4x12, and YES!!! its badassss.... its sporting the old original black-backs... DAMN!!!
works great with any amp.
The tone is unreal, no other way to put it. full bodied, not al all harsh. but full and vibrant with plenty of color. Pure rock and roll/blues on tap at any level of volume....
i bought it for $200 and was blown away when i opened her up and found the speakers were still in there , the screws have never been touched. this cab has became a part of my life.
