Have you ever used a preamp pedal this way?

I have recently been loving the way I use my Tech 21 Blonde pedal with my OR15.
Since the OR15 is a single channel amp I was always trying to boost the amp into distortion with my other pedals. But what I really wanted was the pure tone from the amp without much coloration. I was able to do that by going from clean to mild crunch and from light overdrive to distortion by using conservative settings on my pedals, but I really wanted to go from clean to all out distortion. So I had a brain storm. I set my amp to the distortion level that I wanted and set the Tech 21 Blonde clean with the volume low (but close to unity), gain around 9 o'clock and the character just before noon. It is a fender simulator so it does cut some of the mid range (which can be compensated a little with its mid control) and makes it sparkle a little more than the normal amp clean. But then when I kick it off I get the screaming distortion I wanted. I really like the clean sound of the amp by it self but this is a compromise for now. Its using the pedal the reverse of how most people use them but it seems to work just as well.

I was just curious as to how many other people have used their preamp pedals in this way for a single channel amp and if you liked it? (sometimes mid strum I'm looking to kick it over so using the volume knob is very hard to do)?

not QUITE the same, but i use my JHS Morning Glory in sort of the same fashion. the MG cuts lower mids, adds higher mids and gives an overall more chimey tone. it also adds a slight amount of grit that is extremely touch sensitive. makes my Rocker 30's natural channel (which i've always felt was 95% there, but not quite) sound sorta like an AC30 on the edge of breakup. sounds lovely.

also, Paul Gilbert's pretty famous for using his HBE Detox EQ to turn a dirty amp into a clean amp by reducing volume and cutting some mids.

You could try a EH Signal Pad

Yep, I've used my Award Session JD10 preamp like that. Works great that way.

Must try it with my Sansamp VT Bass too.

(Link fixed.)

Yeah, that'd do the job perfectly. Or a good volume pedal would give you instant control on your gain while playing.

Thanks everyone. :D
I will try the EH when I get a chance. They always come out with some cool gear.

Why would you pay money for this?

(link fixed again!)

Because not everyone can build their own? :o

Or are you doubting the concept? Big advantages of going this route are
1. what you get is 100% your amps natural overdrive and tone, and
2. since you are cutting for cleaner sounds rather than boosting for dirtier ones you'll not introduce any extra noise.

Works well!

Because even if you did build your own, you still have to pay for parts. Approx. $30. Ehx Signal pad, approx $45.
