NAKED - Trinity Triwatt Kit
NAKED = New Amp Kit Estimated Delivery
I have just put together an order for a Trinity Amps Triwatt Kit.
I currently use a Hiwatt DR103 as my main gigging amp however I have been looking around for something that could achieve a similar tone but in lower wattage for when I play small gigs or for home usage. I was considering the Hiwatt Custom 20 1x12 combo however I am not really wanting to give any money to Music Grounds due to their shoddy reputation.
So, after hunting around for a low wattage Hiwatt clone, I came across the Trinity Amps Triwatt. It has a preamp modeled on the mid 70s DR103, Heyboer Partridge clone transformers based on the DR504 OT and PT and runs on either a pair of 6V6 or KT66 tubes for 18-25w. It also can apparently be modded to run on EL34s for closer to 40 watts by making adjustments to the bias and shorting the zener.
From reading reviews on this amp it apparently nails the Hiwatt tone really well with a good amount of clean headroom for a 22w amp and the ability to get the cranked Live At Leeds sound at a low(er) volume.
Now to get this amp sent to Australia it would cost me around $2k for the head alone. That is when I realised that they do it as a kit. I have been wanting to try my hand at amp building for a while as a graduated step up from pedal building so this seemed like a good opportunity. The best part is that the kit with Sozo caps can be mine for $750 AUD inclusive of shipping and Steve from Trinity will even send me a plan to build my own head enclosure.
To save cost I am going to be going for surface shipment so it will take a while to turn up (if I can put some pennies away in the next week I'll consider upping it to air but that is an extra $90).
I'll put an update up on here when it arrives and I start building it. No doubt I'll be looking for opinions on my soldering skill as I go
More info on the kit can be found here - http://www.trinityamps.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=1516" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's pretty cool. I wish I could build amps. I'm horrible with the iron. Good luck man!
Re: NAKED - Trinity Triwatt Kit
That's been a dream amp of mine for a few years now: DR103 with a 18-22 watt power section. PLEASE let me know how this turns out! It should be amazing!

Wow what an awesome project!

It should definitely be a fun build.Neiloler wrote:That's been a dream amp of mine for a few years now: DR103 with a 18-22 watt power section. PLEASE let me know how this turns out! It should be amazing!
It was a toss up between the Triwatt and the Ceriatone Stray Cat 30 (Matchless SC30) however I decided to stick closely to my main amp for tone for my first build. At least that way I have some sort of reference point.

Re: NAKED - Trinity Triwatt Kit
O.K.
After a bit of a delay due to my desktop blowing up and having to buy a new laptop, I am back on track.
Order has been placed with shipping upgraded to Air Freight, so I should get it soon.
I think I'll need to invest in a new solder station. Can anybody recommend a decent brand/model? I've been using my old one for ages for pedals however think some finer work is involved for an amp.

Re: NAKED - Trinity Triwatt Kit
Well, the kit has arrived and I've started building the chassis.
Right now my brain is telling me that I've made some sort of horrible error in my ability and I should give up... SO MANY WIRES!!!!
Anyway, I shall stick with it and hope for the best.

Hope that Harry Joyce will inspire you to create a masterpiece. Looks as if it should sound great - if you know what I mean.
Good luck, hope it all goes smoothly.
