New Tiny Terror, need cab

Hello,
This is my first post but I've been reading this board for a while. It took me a while to find out how to register.

I just bought a Tiny Terror and am looking for a cab for it. I have been using a Carvin Legacy 2x12 but I may return it because I think it sounds a bit choked. It's a small box for having 2 12's in it.

I've been looking at an Orange PPC212-CB or a used Mesa Boogie Rectifier 2x12. I'm not sure exactly what the differences are between them so I was hoping for opinions on this board.

I want a cab that gives me all the range and depth the TT has and doesn't get choked or sound muddy. I'll be using the cab at home in my office or basement and the only gigging the cab would see is if someone asks to borrow it. Lol. Trying to decide on these cabs has been difficult because I can't A/B them.

So I have it narrowed to the Mesa2x12, the PPC212 and maybe even the PPC112? What cab would you suggest?

I can't comment on the Mesa cab but for me the best 12" speaker I've found is a Celestion G12H30. I have a PPC112, that I converted to an open back and loaded with a G12H30 that has seen a lot of play time with my TT head. I don't particularly like Vintage 30s, which is what the Orange cabs come with but that's simply a personal preference. I've since moved to using a 2x10 with Eminence Ramrods though, which kill with the TT, in my opinion.

It might be worth looking at Avatar cabs too. They are a independent cab maker, who make a pretty decent cab and you can get them loaded up with just about any Celesition or they have a few Eminence speakers available too.

If you're using it at home I'd say get a PPC112. It'll go plenty loud enough (I only took one of them to band practise last week and I could hear myself fine), and it's easier to carry around than a 2x12!

I used to have a Tiny Terror, then a Rockerverb 50, and now a Dark Terror... all through PPC112s, and they sound absolutely great to me

if it's going to be at home, i say why not get the 212? but i second that suggestion to check out Avatar. they have some seriously nice cabs for really cheap.

as for speakers, usually V30s or G12H30s are the way to go. it depends on the style of music you play though. if you're into really aggresive sounding music, the V30s would be more your style, but the G12's work better imo for just about everything else.

Since there're 8x12 speakers in each of these cab stacks.. even with 5 you'll still be looking pretty even at 40 (speakers) x12s


I have a 1x12 for my TT and TH30h. I like it a lot, its easy to move, push back against the wall for a little angle action, and sounds great. I am looking to get a 212OB for that stereo sound, and to load a g12h on the top.. not to mention semi-open back is pretty good, and my closed-back 2x4 DIY is already in the works!

yep that's what he meant. i have a 112 I've had with my TT since I got it that I'm selling that I've loved. Great combo.

I would say another vote here for one with a g12h30. I own a tiny terror and it has to be louder for a vintage 30 to sound good. Not sure what kind of ceiling you would have on volume but the g12h30 sounds better earlier to my ears. Personally I think a 112 would be fine if you are in your office or just at home.

On a related note.. a buddy of mine drove 2 hours to Lancaster, PA to score a mint TT combo for $$$. His first tube amp!!

Just FYI. Since actual price discussion isn't allowed I'll say that the Mesa 212 is used and is 22% less than a new Avatar 212. The Orange 112 is new but I can get it for 26% less than the Avatar. The Orange 212 is used and about 10% more than the Avatar.

My point is not to talk price but to point out that a new Avatar wouldn't save me money so that isn't part of the equation.

You can mention prices on anything but current production Orange stuff.

For instance, that Marshall 8x12 would probably only run you about $100,000 or so. Clearly the most practical choice for rocking. If you score five of them that would be cool. Only six were made I think. The Who cut them all in half or something like that.

I don't have the room for that and my ears aren't as finely tuned to be able to appreciate its awesomeness like you do. I just want a simple cab that will give the TT a big, full sound. I haven't been playing long and was hoping to take advantage of others expertise and trial and error. I'm sure I will develop preferences in time but I'd like to get started with something I'm not likely to regret for a while.

If it is in good shape, the Mesa sounds like the best deal. They hold their value pretty well too. I wouldn't be able to play a mismatched rig myself for psychological reasons though .

I started with a TT head and PPC112 (w/ Vintage 30) and eventually picked up a TT combo (w/ G12H-30) as well. I would not say the tonal difference is huge, but I do like the combo much better.

If you play heavier/tighter stuff, the closed-back Orange 2x12 or Mesa 2x12 would probably be the best option. However, an open-back 2x12 with G12H-30s would be pretty awesome for classic stuff. If you go with a new cab from Avatar, Whitebox, etc., you could also consider a mixture of speakers like a G12M-25 and a Vintage 30. That would be a great combination as well.

In conclusion, buy like ten cabs and keep the one that sounds and looks the best. Then send the rest of them to me .
