I think that's pretty close to what Jim Root uses. The Jim Root Telecaster has an EMG 81 in the bridge and an EMG 60 in the neck and I think he plays a Rockerverb (not sure which one though).

My guitars have EMG 81s in the bridge & 60s in the neck. They're great with the Rockerverb; really crisp & clear, and a really open distortion :)

I don't think it's that strange; one of my friends loves the 85s, he has them to the exclusion of all else. The 81 is a bit smoother sounding, the 85 has more of a raw sound.

This is an 81 through a Rockerverb 50. Settings I used to use were bass on full, middle 11 o'clock, treble 2 o'clock, and pretty much all the gain:

From my (limited) experience of the 85, it'll sound a little less smooth, but the voicing will be similar.

I personally think active pickups are garbage, and emg 81's are pretty much the worst thing ever invented. If you're after tone I'd avoid them like the plague. They sound too inorganic, augmented....so many bands use them and the there's now pretty much a whole sub-genre of homogenised emg 81 music.

I use seymour duncans. For me they support a range of tonal inflections which everything else I've tried simply doesn't seem to. Bareknuckle make some damn fine pups too.

Starling, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same thing, wouldn't it? ;)

I had a Jackson Kelly with Seymour Duncans, a JB in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck, I think. They were indeed lovely sounding pickups, but for the music I play I just find EMGs have more clarity, definition and bite.

Then again I use a Dark Terror so I clearly know nothing about what sounds good :D

I support your thoughts.

I have Rockerverb 50 and two guitar at this moment:

90s Jackson Kelly KE3 with EMG 81/85
90s Jackson RR3 with Seymour Duncan SH16

RR3 > KE3, I'm sorry. EMGs sound very flat, muffled and give too much fizz although I spend hours to twek my amp right for them.
