Might be leaving Orange...

Post by Wendigo » Tue May 15, 2012 3:52 pm

After some thought I might sell my RV50C, just because since I have my Marshall VM, the Orange just sounds second rate. I know this wont be a popular post here, and I have loved the Orange since 2005 or so I think, but my eyes have been opened and the RV50C just doesn't have the response I'm looking for anymore. :(

Maybe I wont sell it, but I have a guy who's willing to give me 1200€ for it and that's looking pretty good after 7 years.

Vintage modern is the best amp I played along with the thunderverb 50 without a doubt. Didn't like rockerverb but it's such a good amp so I say do what u need to.

Leave it for a couple months before you play it again, so you can evaluate it with fresh ears.

Give it at least a couple of months. The VM certainly is a good choice but so is the Rv ....

Orange and Marshall are for sure two different sounds. They are like cousins, but the differences are there. I don't have an opinion either way as I like both. It just so happens my bandmate plays Marshall, and I play Orange and they compliment each other well.

If you don't find yourself needing both, I say go with what you think is right. If they money would be better served in another place, then sell it off. My only advice after owning tons of amps, is that the honey moon period can skew the bigger picture. If six months down the road the amp is serving it's purpose, I think that's when you can for sure say it's a keeper.

Interesting development!

Their voicing will certainly be very different - the RV just can't get as tight as marshalls can.

Horses for courses though - i do love that "loose" tone the RV had. Still to try a VM though, something i'd like to do very much. Have you tried running your combo through your cabinet too?

Well I owned both a VM and an OR50 for a while and the one I sold was the VM. A great amp, but for my my band situation, the OR just ruled. I play mostly in a trio and I like the way the Orange fits in the mix. A little more agressive sounding too I think. But If I had a Marshall, it sure would be that one. You can always come back.

+1

you can always sell it later, unless you have the self discipline to not spend the money ever until you may want another orange. I know I wouldn't

I knew you'd love the VM, I just didn't know you would love it enough to sell your Orange :(

I say do what feels right to you, but I know that I bounce back and forth between my marshalls and oranges a lot, so selling wouldn't be an option for me unless I needed the money.

Your RV is a MKI though, so it may be a bit more difficult to land another one if you decide later that you should not have sold it. I mean, I know they're not rare, but still not being made anymore either.

Iron is the Vintage Modern closer to a Plexi sound than a JCM would you say?

Yeah, you COULD say that. The VM is smoother than the JCM series for sure, but it high dynamic range, it'll pull some pretty close tones to the JCM 800....This amp really has a bunch of tones in it, it's a lot more versatile than an 800.

2005-2012, that's a pretty darn good run. Music tastes change as well as tastes in tone. I got my first Orange (TT) in 2006 but I still play the hell out of that amp.

Good luck and congrats on your VM!

this amp - which i bought on nothing but a whim and a bit of research is for me - it slays the rocker 30 (now sold) and i even prefer it to my jcm800 4104 (which i am still holding on to)
