Orange logo discussion aside...What does this image mean to you? (I'll explain why in a bit.)

As in what does it make me feel or what do I understand it to be?

It is Brittania, but as a symbol she was most used in Victorian and v early 20th century times. Not something commonly referred to or used for a long time.

...unless you stick your hand in your pocket! Used on the back of 50p coins until very recently and also appears on banknotes.

As ECW says, more popular way back when - "Rule Brittania" and all that...

"a rhetorical evocation of a British national identity. Especially following the Acts of Union in 1707, which joined the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, the personification of the martial Britannia was used as an emblem of British imperial power and unity..."

Yeah, that's about it.

It has quite different connotations on this island, though hatchets have been buried in the last decade or so I'm happy to say.

The Act of Union of 1801 brought Ireland under the direct rule of Britain. During this time Ireland was subject to famine, revolution, more revolution, civil war and independance for part of Ireland. The Good Friday Agreement saw the end to a lot of violence in the north and as recent as last year we had a state visit from the queen of england who spoke our native language at the start of her speech. So we have moved a long way since 1801.

If you were to visit Northern Ireland you would see this image portraying the Unionist identity in pubs and areas where that identity is vibrant, much like you would see tri-colours and shamrocks where the nationalist identity is strong.

I'm looking for a strong image to represent my English ancestry.
My family (last name Gentry) came from Great Dunmow, Essex before ending up in Virginia USA in the early 1700s.

This is for a tattoo design, so I wanted to put my "feelers" out there to get a general consensus on what the image means to the people that live in Britain now.

I'd thought about family crests, but there's so much inaccuracy with them on the interwebz, I'm steering clear.

I appreciate your replies thusfar, and am looking fwd to more.

I live in a North Essex village just 15 miles from Great Dunmow.

To me, Britannia with the trident it's an outdated image that represents Britain as an arrogant conquering nation.

Have you also considered the Great Dunmow village coat of arms? The wild boar image from it would make a great tattoo on its own:

This is where England went wrong. Became weak pointless country who has no morals. Enoch Powell was right with his "Rivers of blood" speech.

As for the topic.
This symbol means not alot to be honest. Not a popular symbol you see these days.
Don't really no to much about history. Now days all English crap is bulldogs with a flag lol
Tone is everything

The Great Dunmow Wild Boar is a much better choice for a tattoo than the first pic (unless you made Britannia look more like Katy Perry of course).

Complete and utter racism. These comments have got nothing to do with the original post and have no place on this or any other forum.
