Anyone played a Hendrix style Strat with the bridge pickup

Post by Thinline_slim » Fri Apr 06, 2012 8:58 pm

reversed? I don't really care if it's an actual "Hendrix" Strat but having the treble side of the pickup closer to the neck and the bass side closer to the bridge is what I'm really after. To me that makes more sense because a Strat's bridge pickup is just so dang bright.

Anyway, just curious to see if anyone's played with one and your impressions of it.

That would be exactly what I'm talking about. And I really appreciate you putting the pic up as well. Photobucket has been blocked for now at work so I don't put up pictures anymore.

i play a reversed strat since years...

it´s still very bright in the bridge position, but the bass strings sound a bit more piano-like....i like it a lot

you can get an impression of what it sounds like here: http://www.lastfm.de/music/jamhed/_/What+I+need

the guitar that begins the song is the reversed strat on the bridge through an ad30 cleanish

Like this? Yeah, it sounds good, but I prefer the middle pickup sound on this guitar....

I tried the link but I'm not sure what I would need to click on to actually listen to it. Any tips?

Philhed and Billy, which do you prefer the reverse or standard? Is the difference even noticeable in a live setting?

i think i prefer it reversed, but maybe that´s just because i´m used to it.
it definitely sounds and feels different....not much, but it does.

i'm with billy on this.

i've played single coils my whole life and i can't recall having an issue of one being too bright.

i do not intend to come across as critical but it's an amp issue, or the volume and tone knobs on your guitar.

and in reality the placement [slant] of the pickup is a bit of a gimmick and it was designed to enhance the picker's optimal placement and thus enhance volume. but really, as bill said there isn't a difference.

in other words, if you're on the bridge and things are too bright, move your picking up towards the neck.

The other guitarist in my band used to have a Voodoo Strat. He regrets selling it immeasurably.

I'm not sure I remember the pickup placement making a huge difference to the sound. I think the 'upside down' headstock had a bigger effect, altering the string tensions. Lower on the bass strings, letting them resonate more.

Yeah, and to me, that's another fiction. I don't think the extra low string length does anything audible...

To be honest, I found it to be more of a difference in feel with the extra string length, but it definitely does alter the behavior of the string. A bit like a reverse Firebird. Become all the more noticable if you start to downtune too.
