Re: Epiphone ES 339
The tone caps can be fairly important, different makes have different characteristics. The Epi caps are usually cheap 5 cent caps, there are some good videos out there that will show you changing tone caps will do. Pots, you don't NEED to change, but cheap ones do wear out faster and in a hollow body guitar, it can be a pain in the arse to change pickups so it's almost worthwhile putting all quality electronics in when you do replace something to save yourself some trouble down the line.TESLA_EL34 wrote:I think it's not necessary to replace all electronics. Just add a treble bleed cap and replace the pups and it's fine.
Replace whatever needs to be replaced but don't fall that "replacing all electronics will result in better tone".
I've done this before and there is no benefit, except you use a special pot wiht maybe 550k for the neck.

And how is the Shadow p/up in that? What do your find it adds to the guitar? I know that Shadow p/ups can be very good, but here that is basically doubling the price of the guitar...BaBaBooey wrote:I dig mine! But it's an Ultra.

Have to say the EPI 339s sound really interesting. I'll definitely have to check them out.

Re: Epiphone ES 339
The ULTRA also has the "Epiphone Probucker's" which are somewhat similar to the Gibson Burstbuckers.
You can also combine the Nanomag with the Humbuckers and you get two Outputs, an USB slot, a Tuner which is built into the guitar, Guitar Rig LE. For me that was kind of "too much" and i pulled the trigger on a ebony 339 PRO. I don't need an USB slot i have a nice Interface. The Nanomag would be awesome though but probably wouldn't get too much use.

They get pretty good reviews:

For me the first thing i'm doing is to install other Pickups. But i need to seel some stuff first. For now it's good.
I really start to like this guitar. I think the value for the money is incredible! I really like the dual coil split...
No need to bring two guitars to a smaller gig now! I'm really surprised with the quality of these guitars.
And the stock pickups aren't too bad in a band context. I was surprised anyone could hear my through all my amps.
I've heared worse.

Sorry if I was a little overly simplistic. Perhaps I should say that when you buy an Epiphone, be prepared to replace all of the electronics.

I think the guitar is quite bright with a lot of bite! I can't believe how bright it sounds!
An ES 335 is warmer and rounder to my ears.

Re: Epiphone ES 339
I'm not gonna use the USB at all. The probuckers DO sound pretty dame good! I was thinking about putting some Bare Knuckle Rebel Yells in there... Not sure if I want to though.
The Nanomag is amazing... I run mine into the LR Baggs box then to a PA... Pretty convincing. If you use both outputs into 2 sources, it sounds SO full. You have 3 options... Nano only, pickups only or a blend.
I love my sound when i do the Rockerverb gain around 11 oclock blended with the Nanomag... Sounds so big & rich. (not the band)
The best thing might be the tuner on the pickup ring. It also mutes everything when tuning.

Had the opportunity to play the Gibson vs. Epiphone models yesterday. BIIIIIIG difference in tone. The Gibson was few pounds lighter and acoustically a lot more vibrant and clear. The Epiphone was still nice, but upgrading one won't bring it close. Nice to hear the difference in $2000!
