I'd like a better tuner.

Post by nlimbaugh » Sun Apr 01, 2012 5:55 pm

I've always been happy with my chromatic Yamaha YT-250. But, recently it just seems like I could use a more precise reading. I've really been using the tuner as more of a guide... I compare the tuning of tracks to harmonics that I record before each take... because relying solely on the tuner hasn't worked for me. I guess more precision is what I'm after. Suggestions?

apparently strobe tuners are the way to go!

i've been eyeing the peterson strobo stomp, due to it's di out capabilities... could come in handy?

http://www.thegigrig.com/acatalog/Turbo_Tuner.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

this is also another option to consider... daniel from the gig rig's tried most pedal's and looking at some of the stuff he speaks of, could pretty much have any pedal.

The ST-200 ended the search for me a few years ago:

Then I bought a second one.

I don't use a tuner, never have.

Heard good things about the Korg PitchBlack

Also the Boss TU2

Good luck!

Awesome. My Boss TU-2 was giving me hell yesterday. Everytime it said I was in tune I'd have to adjust by ear.

Perfect timing with posting this topic up

Looks like I'll be getting the ST-200.

mini polytune. do it. they're so cute. and yet so badass. i have a bigger one and i love it. and i've heard nothing but great things about the mini. i'll be upgrading eventually.

i had a pitchblack and sold it after a string of outdoor shows. the LED on that thing isn't bright enough. it was the only pedal on my board that suffered from white-out in the sun.

I have the BOSS TU-3

It's VERY accurate for me. It's almost 3x as precise as the older TU-2 and even though I have a very sensitive ear for mis-tunings, this thing beats my ears every time.

LOVE the polytone! But the mini does not have strobe display mode, AFAIK? Needle display mode only...

I have a pitchblack, no issues. In direct bright sunlight all tuners are hard to see, so I just tape a piece of card to it as a homemade sun shield when needed.

For the money a Korg Pitchblack is hard to beat. I have a T.C Polytune and a Turbo Tuner which are both great with the T.T being slightly quicker to track and the display being easier and clearer to see. I used to have a Strobostomp and I loved the way the strobe worked but mine kept really popping when activated and the footprint was bigger than the others. If it helps I was going to sell the Polytune but in strobe mode I find I like it more than the Poly mode and had I have used it this way from the start I probably would not have got the Turbo Tuner although I would say it is better. Also bare in mind that the Poly has the option to power other pedals like the BOSS ones do, the Turbo Tuner does not!

pretty sure the mini has the different displays...at least the switch is there. as far as i know the only drawback(s) are no battery and no 9VDC out.

I had to check the online manual now to be sure. The only switch on it is for selecting dropped or capo tuning, but no switch for strobe mode. Stay away if you need that mode. :)
