dynamic mics and headroom

Post by nlimbaugh » Sat Mar 10, 2012 9:12 pm

My dynamic mics require a high input level compared to my tube condenser. I figure this is inherent to the design, but I'm not sure. I suppose I would like a dynamic mic that I can keep the level low to help avoid unwanted noise. My Sennheiser mk2 and SM57 both have to be turned to about 2'oclock while the condenser gets to stay at around 9 o'clock. Just curious.

That's normal. This is where higher gain good mic preamps come into play.

Totally normal. Condensers will also be more sensitive and pick up finer audio details.
